Mystery Inc. is officially back in business! Netflix has dropped the first look at its highly anticipated live-action Scooby-Doo reboot, now officially titled Scooby-Doo: Origins. The series has started filming in Atlanta, Georgia, and the streaming giant marked the occasion by releasing a fresh image of the gang—minus the iconic Great Dane—along with juicy new plot details.
The photo shows the four human members peering around a large wooden door, with a giant paw print hinting at the furry friend we all know and love. From top to bottom, we see Fred Jones (Maxwell Jenkins, Reacher), Daphne Blake (McKenna Grace, Scream 7), Velma Dinkley (Abby Ryder Fortson, Ant-Man), and Shaggy Rogers (Tanner Hagen, The Pitt). Also joining the cast is Paul Walter Hauser (The Naked Gun), though his role remains under wraps—could he be the first monster in disguise?
What's the Story?
Scooby-Doo: Origins will delve into how the gang first came together. Old friends Shaggy and Daphne are spending their last summer at camp when they stumble into a mystery involving a Great Dane puppy who may be the sole witness to a supernatural murder. They team up with dorky townie Velma and weird new kid Fred to solve the case. It's a fresh take that promises to explore the roots of this beloved team.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Scooby-Doo first debuted in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, created by Ken Ruby and Joe Spears for Hanna-Barbera. The show followed four teens and their talking dog as they traveled in the Mystery Machine, unmasking villains in costumes. The series spawned countless spin-offs, including The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, which introduced real supernatural elements. Live-action films in the 2000s, directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn, brought the gang to the big screen, but this marks the first-ever live-action series.
The creative team behind Scooby-Doo: Origins includes showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (High Fidelity, Citadel), with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions, plus André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson from Midnight Radio. Toby Haynes (Andor) will direct the pilot.
