Netflix is closing out June with a bang, but the streaming giant already has its sights set on July—and one of the most anticipated sci-fi thrillers of the summer is almost here. Human Vapor, an eight-episode series reimagining a classic 1960 Japanese sci-fi film, will premiere on July 2, 2026. The show promises a modern take on a story that's equal parts supernatural vigilante justice and social commentary.

The plot centers on a mysterious figure who terrorizes Japanese society by committing gruesome crimes in broad daylight—and getting away with it. His chilling debut? A live television interview where a man suddenly explodes on air. The culprit, known only as Human Vapor, has the ability to turn his body into gas, allowing him to slip through any crack, evade capture, and strike again. He taunts the police by announcing his next move in advance, daring them to stop him.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Finally Gets August 2026 Release Date on Apple TV+
Ted Lasso Season 4 is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on August 5, 2026. The beloved series returns after a long hiatus.

This isn't just a straightforward remake. The series updates the 66-year-old story for a contemporary audience, exploring themes of justice, class divide, and the lengths people will go to expose uncomfortable truths. While Human Vapor's methods are brutal, his actions are driven by a desire to reveal a larger societal corruption. The police, however, see only a criminal who must be stopped at all costs.

Who's Behind the Camera?

The series is written and executive-produced by Yeon Sang-ho, the visionary director behind Train to Busan and Hellbound. His knack for blending high-stakes horror with deep social themes makes him a perfect fit for this project. Directing is Shinzo Katayama, known for Gannibal and Siblings of the Cape. The production also brought together visual effects teams from Korea and Japan to create a modern sci-fi masterpiece.

In the lead role, newcomer UTA makes his acting debut as the enigmatic Human Vapor. He's joined by a stellar cast: Shun Oguri plays Detective Kenji Okamoto, the relentless officer on the case; Yu Aoi portrays journalist Kyoko Kno, who documents the vigilante's story; Suzu Hirose and Kento Hayashi play siblings who run a content creation channel and may have a scoop on Human Vapor; and Yutaka Takenouchi appears as a yakuza figure.

If you're a fan of edge-of-your-seat thrillers that are perfect from start to finish, this series should be on your radar.

What to Expect

While the series takes creative liberties, it stays true to the spirit of the original 1960 film directed by Ishirō Honda (the man behind the original Godzilla). The new version leans into the tension of a cat-and-mouse game between a superpowered criminal and a baffled police force. It also asks tough questions about who gets to define justice—and whether the system is rigged from the start.

All eight episodes of Human Vapor drop exclusively on Netflix on July 2, 2026. For more on what's coming to streaming, check out the ultimate ranking of Netflix's best miniseries ever.
