In a seismic shift for the gaming industry, Microsoft has announced a massive round of layoffs that will see 4,800 employees lose their jobs, with the Xbox division bearing the brunt of the cuts. According to a report from CNBC, 3,200 of those positions will come from Xbox alone, representing roughly one-fifth of the entire gaming workforce. The news comes on the heels of Sony and PlayStation's recent move away from physical media, signaling a turbulent period for console gaming.
The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring plan that will unfold over the next two years. About 1,600 roles are being eliminated immediately, with the remaining cuts expected to be completed by 2027. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma informed employees that the staggered approach was necessary because "it is not possible to make all the necessary changes in a single day." She also expressed optimism about the company's future, stating, "I want XBOX to be one of the few companies that entertains more than a billion people each day and gives everyone the opportunity to create and connect. I know we can achieve this goal."
What Does the Xbox Restructuring Involve?
Beyond the layoffs, Microsoft is spinning off four of its gaming studios. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will regain their independence, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are reportedly in talks to join new ownership. The fate of Arkane Studios, which joined Microsoft through the $8.1 billion ZeniMax Media acquisition in 2021, remains uncertain. The studio is said to be exploring strategic options, but no final decisions have been made. This has fueled speculation about the future of projects like the rumored Blade game, which has been the subject of cancellation rumors amid the restructuring.
Microsoft chief people officer Amy Coleman attributed the changes to a workplace reshaped by AI, though she insisted the technology is not directly replacing employees. "Some of the tasks we do every day can now be automated," she wrote, adding that staff will need to "keep learning, keep building new skills, and keep adapting as the work evolves." The statement has done little to soothe concerns among affected workers.
The gaming industry has been hit hard by layoffs in recent years, and this latest round from Microsoft is one of the largest. The company's decision to spin off studios like Double Fine and Ninja Theory marks a significant shift from its previous strategy of aggressive acquisition. As the industry continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how these changes impact the development of beloved franchises and the broader gaming landscape.
