Fresh off his career-defining turn in Succession, Matthew Macfadyen is trading boardroom battles for a domestic dilemma of, well, smaller proportions. ShowtimeSpot has an exclusive sneak peek at Peacock's upcoming genre-bending series The Miniature Wife, which sees Macfadyen's scientist character, Les, making a high-stakes pitch to a potential partner played by Ronny Chieng.
In the newly revealed footage, Les Littlejohn (Macfadyen) enthusiastically presents his world-changing invention to Hilton Smith (Chieng). His vision? To solve global hunger by shrinking crops like corn to minuscule sizes, allowing for unprecedented agricultural yields. The process, as he breezily explains, involves manipulating the space between atoms—though he dismisses the complex science as "mumbo-jumbo" to focus on the monumental possibilities.
However, there's a catch, and it's a big one for something so small. Les reveals the technology has a critical flaw: he hasn't yet figured out how to reverse the shrinking process. This tiny wrinkle in his grand plan is about to become a massive problem, as a later accident will see his wife, Lindy (Elizabeth Banks), zapped down to a mere six inches tall.
The series, based on the short story by Manuel Gonzalez, transforms this scientific mishap into a profound and absurd exploration of marriage. With Lindy suddenly living in a dollhouse and her writer's block magnified by her miniature stature, the power dynamics in their relationship are completely upended. Their attempts to fix the situation are fraught, as seen in the trailer where efforts to enlarge objects have explosive results. This leaves Lindy reliant on the very husband whose invention trapped her, sparking a unique battle for control that is both hilarious and deeply serious.
Behind the scenes, the series boasts impressive talent. Macfadyen and Banks also serve as executive producers alongside creators and showrunners Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner, known for their work on Boardwalk Empire and Goliath. The cast is rounded out by O-T Fagbenle, Zoe Lister-Jones, Sian Clifford, and Sofia Rosinsky, with Aasif Mandvi and others in recurring roles. Directing duties are handled by Greg Mottola of Superbad fame.
The Miniature Wife promises to be one of the most unique series to hit streaming this spring, blending high-concept sci-fi with sharp marital comedy.
