After a five-year wait that felt like an eternity for fans, one of Britain's most celebrated crime dramas is finally ready to make its grand return. Line of Duty season 7 has officially wrapped production, bringing the beloved AC-12 team—Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), and Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar)—back together for a new investigation that promises to be their most sensitive yet.
The show, created by Jed Mercurio (Bodyguard), became a cultural phenomenon during its initial run, with its sixth season drawing a staggering 15.79 million live viewers. However, that season's controversial finale left many fans divided, casting a shadow over the series' otherwise stellar reputation. Now, with production complete, Mercurio and the BBC have a chance to set things right.
What's New in Season 7?
The upcoming season finds AC-12 disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards. According to the official synopsis, anti-corruption work has never been harder, and the team is assigned a case involving Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, a charismatic officer accused of using his position as a sexual predator. But as the team digs deeper, they suspect Gough's case may be a deliberate distraction from a larger threat lurking in the shadows.
McClure took to social media to share the exciting news, writing, "And we’re Off Duty!! The last 4 months spent with two of my best mates. The brilliant cast & crew pulled out all the stops to bring Jed Mercurio's script to life…thank you. Home time now, so can’t wait, missed my lot every single day." Mercurio himself chimed in, calling the shoot "monumental."
Robert Carlyle Joins the Cast
Every season of Line of Duty has featured a standout guest star, and season 7 is no exception. Trainspotting and Hamish Macbeth star Robert Carlyle will headline as Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a Specialist Rifle Officer (SRO) and veteran marksman operating with Tactical Operations Unit 7 (TO-7) to take down organized crime groups. Previous guest stars have included Stephen Graham, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniel Mays, so Carlyle is in excellent company.
The series returns in 2027, and while an exact premiere date hasn't been announced, the completion of filming suggests a release is imminent. For fans who've been waiting half a decade, the end is finally in sight.
