Warner Bros. and Legendary are doubling down on the blockbuster success of A Minecraft Movie with a sequel that's already generating major buzz. The follow-up, officially titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, has just been revealed alongside a first-look image featuring new cast member Kirsten Dunst alongside returning stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black. The film is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.

The title is a clever nod to both the game's iconic cubic blocks and the promise of a bigger, bolder adventure. The first shot from the movie shows Dunst standing alongside Momoa and Black, hinting at her role as Alex—the female counterpart to Black's Steve. Dunst steps into the part previously voiced by Kate McKinnon and played by Alice May Connolly in a post-credits scene of the original film. Director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) returns to helm the sequel, co-writing the script with Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer).

What Happened in the First Movie

The original A Minecraft Movie followed siblings Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Natalie (Emma Myers) as they moved to small-town Chuglass, Idaho, after their mother's death. Henry befriends washed-up video game champ Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), and together they accidentally activate a mysterious artifact that transports them to the Overworld—a dimension where anything can be built from imagination. There, they meet Steve (Black), who has built much of the Overworld's civilization, and team up against the porcine witch Malgosha (Rachel House). Meanwhile, the Overworld resident Nitwit (Matt Berry) ends up in the real world, finding romance with Henry's vice principal, Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge). The film was a surprise box office smash, grossing $961 million worldwide on a $150 million budget.

For fans eager to see their own creations in the sequel, Microsoft and Warner Bros. have launched the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge, a contest that will let winners see their builds featured in A Minecraft Movie Squared. Details are available at Minecraft.net.

Video game adaptations have come a long way, and A Minecraft Movie is part of a wave that includes acclaimed projects like HBO's The Last of Us, which set a new standard for the genre. The sequel's title and casting suggest the franchise is aiming to build on that momentum with a playful, self-aware approach.

With Dunst joining the ensemble, A Minecraft Movie Squared is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sequels in the video game adaptation space. Fans won't have to wait long to see how the story expands—mark your calendars for July 2027.
