The dark side is getting a major talent boost. As Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord prepares to bring the iconic Sith Lord back to screens, a surprising casting secret has been revealed: Oscar-nominated actor Wagner Moura joined the project years ago, and producers successfully kept his role a secret throughout his recent awards season rise.

A Secret Recorded in the Past

In an exclusive interview, executive producers Athena Yvette Portillo and Brad Rau detailed the covert operation to bring Moura into the Star Wars universe. Portillo confirmed that Moura recorded his dialogue for detective Brander Lawson either in late 2024 or early 2025—nearly two years before his starring role in The Secret Agent made him an international awards contender. This timing allowed his participation to remain hidden even as he collected accolades including a Cannes Best Actor win and a Golden Globe.

Not every Prime Video hit stands the test of time. We look at shows that have soured due to controversy, problematic narratives, or simply losing their way.

"Yes, that is true," Portillo stated when asked if Moura's work predated his awards buzz. The producer emphasized that his involvement was secured well before all eyes turned to him during the competitive Oscar race that included Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet.

The Recruitment of a Star

According to Brad Rau, the credit for bringing Moura into the fold goes to fellow executive producer Josh Rimes. "He's the one who first suggested we should talk to Wagner Moura," Rau explained. "We're like, 'Can we, can we, can we? Let's try it. Let's do it, Josh.'"

The meeting with Moura proved immediately successful, but not for the reasons the producers might have expected. "We weren't really talking about Star Wars with Wagner," Rau revealed. "He was just so interested in this character, Brander Lawson, who's a better detective than a father, and all the complications that come with that. We were just blown away talking to him. Having him on the show is a huge win. I don't know how we did it."

Moura's Versatile Force

Wagner Moura brings considerable dramatic heft to the animated series. Beyond his recent Oscar-nominated turn, the actor has built an impressive resume including his portrayal of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar in Narcos, voicing the wolf grim reaper in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and playing a journalist in Alex Garland's Civil War. His casting represents a significant achievement for the Dave Filoni-created project, which also features Sam Witwer returning as Maul alongside Gideon Adlon and Richard Ayoade.

The series revisits Darth Maul one year after the Clone Wars, showing the villain rebuilding his criminal empire under the Empire's reign while taking on a new apprentice. Moura's Detective Lawson is destined to be on Maul's trail, setting up a compelling cat-and-mouse game that explores the dark underworld of the planet Janix. The show aims to do more than fill timeline gaps—it seeks to create a fresh, character-driven story within the Star Wars mythology.

Excitement for the series is already high, with Disney+ demonstrating confidence by renewing Maul - Shadow Lord for a second season ahead of its premiere. This early renewal suggests the streaming service believes the show has the potential to become a new franchise cornerstone.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord debuts with two episodes on Disney+ on April 6, followed by two new installments each week through May 4. With its secret casting now revealed and a second season already confirmed, the series positions itself as a major new entry in the expanding Star Wars streaming universe.
