Disney's animated empire is about to get a frosty new chapter. With Toy Story 5 and Zootopia 2 already melting box office records, the studio is now turning its attention to the long-awaited Frozen 3, which is set to hit theaters in just over a year. The sequel will reunite audiences with Anna, Elsa, and Olaf, but this time, a mysterious new villain might be the one to finally give Elsa a run for her money.
At the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Disney Animation head Jared Bush sat down with Collider to share exclusive details about the upcoming film. He confirmed that production is well underway, with songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez already crafting the movie's emotional core. "Right now, literally as we speak, Kristen and Bobby Lopez are working on one of the movie's most emotional songs," Bush revealed. "They are about five songs in."
A New Villain Who Could Rival Elsa's Power
While details about the plot have been kept under wraps, Bush teased a significant new threat. "We have a brand-new character coming in, a new villain, into the world of Frozen, and someone who may be more powerful than Elsa," he said. This mysterious antagonist, whose voice was heard at D23, is already recorded, but the actor's identity remains a secret. "We've already recorded her multiple times," Bush hinted, adding "Stay tuned."
The story picks up shortly after the events of Frozen 2, with Anna and Kristoff's wedding taking center stage. "If you remember the end of Frozen 2, Kristoff finally proposed to Anna. This movie starts with their wedding," Bush explained. That means fans can expect a celebration, but also a clash that could shake Arendelle to its core.
Wedding Bells and New Songs
With a wedding comes music, and the Lopezes are already composing tracks that could become instant classics. Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, has already heard one standout number. "There is a song that you hear around the wedding of Anna and Kristoff that is spectacular," Bush shared, though he kept the details under wraps. The songwriters are known for creating hits like "Let It Go" and "Into the Unknown," so expectations are high.
Beyond the wedding, the film will also introduce a new love interest for Olaf—a snowy girlfriend named Samantha. But with a powerful villain looming, the happy moments may be short-lived.
Frozen 4 and the Bigger Picture
Disney has already announced Frozen 4, and Bush offered insight into how the two films are being developed. "You have to have a rough sense of emotionally where you want your characters to go," he said, emphasizing that each movie must stand on its own. The studio initially hoped for a quick turnaround, but the need for quality has slowed things down. For more on the release timeline, check out our Frozen 4 release window update.
With Frozen 3 arriving next year, fans won't have to wait much longer to see if Elsa can handle a foe who might just be her equal. Until then, the speculation and excitement continue to build.
