Spider-Man has always been a hero of change, but few periods in Marvel Comics history have reshaped him as dramatically as the lead-up to Brand New Day. With Tom Holland's Peter Parker facing a mysterious 'spider-puberty' in the upcoming film, we're revisiting seven of the most shocking transformations from the comics that prove our friendly neighborhood hero can become anything—even a menace.

7. Six-Armed Spider-Man

In 1971's Amazing Spider-Man #100, Stan Lee and Gil Kane delivered a jaw-dropping twist. Peter Parker, planning to propose to Gwen Stacy and retire from crime-fighting, brewed a serum to strip his powers. Instead, the potion backfired, giving him four extra arms. This eight-limbed Spider-Man found himself caught between two other monsters: the Lizard and the Living Vampire, Michael Morbius. A cure came from an unexpected source—Morbius's fangs—in issue #102.

6. Spider-Lizard

When Spider-Man was exposed to energy from Curt Connors' enervator device in 1980's Spectacular Spider-Man #39-40, his radioactive blood mutated him into a savage, reptilian Spider-Lizard. Connors, the man behind the Lizard, had to create an antidote and chase the beast into the sewers to save Peter from a permanent cold-blooded fate.

5. Cosmic Spider-Man

During the 1989 Acts of Vengeance crossover, Spider-Man became the 'strongest hero in the Marvel Universe' after the Enigma Force chose him as its champion. As Cosmic Spider-Man, he could fly, fire energy blasts, and even punch the Gray Hulk into orbit. He wielded this power to defeat Magneto and a Loki-commanded Tri-Sentinel before returning to normal in Amazing Spider-Man #329.

4. Spider-Hulk

In 1990's Web of Spider-Man #69-70, a gamma ray transfer turned Spider-Man into a green, rage-fueled Spider-Hulk. He later cured himself using a bio-device. Decades later, in 2020's Immortal Hulk: Great Power, Loki cursed Peter to become a Spider-Hulk by night, suggesting his radioactive spider-powers attracted the gamma energy.

These transformations highlight how Spider-Man's identity has always been fluid, mirroring the themes of Brand New Day. For more on the web-slinger's evolution, check out our ranking of iconic suits we need in the next game and the latest on Carnage bonding with Spider-Girl.

As the July 31 release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaches, fans can only wonder what new mutations await Peter Parker. Will he gain organic webs like Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man? Or will the mystery of Sadie Sink's character unlock something even stranger? One thing's certain: Marvel's comic book history proves Spider-Man can evolve into almost anything.
