For over a decade, the whip-cracking Belmont family has been quiet on the gaming front. The last new Castlevania title, Lords of Shadow 2, swung onto shelves in 2014 to a lukewarm reception, and Konami seemed to hang up the holy water for a while. But the franchise never truly faded—Netflix's animated series kept the lore alive, and re-releases of classic entries ensured new generations could experience the gothic thrills. Now, the series is finally making a proper comeback with Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and the latest trailer has confirmed a major fan-favorite is along for the ride.
Announced back in February during a State of Play presentation, Belmont's Curse takes a step backward in the family timeline. Instead of following Trevor or Sypha directly, the game centers on Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. Set 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse—where Trevor, Sypha, Grant Danasty, and Alucard teamed up to take down the Prince of Darkness—the story unfolds in a monster-infested Medieval Paris. Dracula's castle has mysteriously reformed, and a desperate bishop calls upon the legendary vampire hunter to investigate. But Trevor doesn't go alone; he brings Rose along, entrusting her with the family's sacred Vampire Killer whip. It's a fast-paced return to the Metroidvania style that Symphony of the Night popularized, and the recent Gamescom trailer gave us a taste of the voice cast bringing this dark tale to life.
A Stellar Voice Cast
The new trailer, which debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live, was all about the actors stepping into the booth for this Parisian adventure. Abby Trott, known for her work in Demon Slayer and DanDaDan, takes on the role of Rose, while JB Blanc—a familiar face from Arcane—voices Trevor. But the big surprise came with the reveal that Alejandra Reynoso would reprise her role as Sypha from the Netflix series. She's not the only one crossing over from the animated world to the game, either. Towards the end of the trailer, the unmistakable voice of Graham McTavish—who you might know from Outlander, House of the Dragon, or any number of fantasy projects—lets out a sinister laugh, confirming he's back as Dracula. It's a thrilling nod to the Netflix show that helped keep the franchise alive during its gaming hiatus.
Joining them are Ray Chase as The Fallen, Erica Lindbeck as Joan of Arc, Aaron LaPlante as Death, and Liam O'Brien, who returns to the role of Isaac over two decades after Curse of Darkness. With such a talented ensemble, Belmont's Curse is shaping up to be a treat for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Behind the Scenes
Konami isn't developing this installment in-house. Instead, they've handed the reins to Evil Empire and Motion Twin. Evil Empire recently worked on The Rogue Prince of Persia, another acclaimed Metroidvania, while Motion Twin is best known for the beloved roguelike Dead Cells. The two studios previously collaborated on a Dead Cells DLC that brought a whole Castlevania-themed area, weapons, and bosses into the game, so they're clearly no strangers to the franchise. That experience should serve them well as they craft this long-awaited return.
The trailer also offers a glimpse of the haunting environments players will explore, the abilities they'll unlock, and the fearsome bosses lurking in the shadows. From the looks of it, Belmont's Curse is aiming to capture the classic Castlevania feel while adding modern polish. If you're a fan of the genre, this is one to keep on your radar.
