Fresh off his role in Apple TV's Prime Target, actor Fra Fee is diving into the shadowy world of Netflix's latest British import, the psychological thriller Unchosen. The series, which debuts on April 21, places Fee at the center of a conservative Christian sect as Sam, an escaped convict whose arrival disrupts the fragile life of a married mother, Rosie (Molly Windsor), and challenges the community's rigid control.
While billed as a limited series, Fee reveals in an exclusive interview that the door may not be completely closed on Sam's story. He describes the character as so compelling that he's already contemplating where a potential second season could lead. "I would love to continue his journey simply because I hadn't come across such a brilliant character in so long," Fee admitted, highlighting the depth he sees in the role.
A Satisfying Story With Room for More
The six-episode first season follows Rosie's contained journey as her encounter with Sam forces her to question the cult's motives and the stability of her marriage to Adam (Asa Butterfield). While the narrative provides a complete arc, Fee notes that Sam's ultimate fate and his precarious position within the church leave intriguing possibilities unexplored. He credits series creator Julie Gearey (Prisoners' Wives) with likely having ideas in reserve should the show resonate with audiences and Netflix greenlight more episodes.
"It's a very satisfying end to the show, and if it were to end here, it's quite a satisfying one," Fee said. "But you know, like anything, if it's a big success, you know they'll want to carry it on, and I think Julie probably has some ideas up her sleeve already."
The One Sacrifice for Season 2
If a renewal does happen, Fee has one humorous grievance: the hairstyle. Joking about the cult's strict aesthetic, he said, "I just didn't really like the hairstyle... the hair is just really lame, but I'd have to get used to that." He playfully suggested that a second season could "redefine the fellowship" with a bit of modernization, a small price to pay for returning to such a rich role.
Unchosen boasts a formidable cast including Siobhan Finneran, Christopher Eccleston, and Alexa Davies, with direction from Philippa Langdale (A Discovery of Witches) and Jim Loach (Criminal Record). For Fee, this marks another Netflix collaboration following his roles in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon and the animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.
The series joins Netflix's robust lineup of gripping, atmospheric thrillers. Fans of the genre who enjoy shows that delve into psychological manipulation and closed communities might also appreciate these masterpieces of psychological disturbance or these flawless hidden gems.
While the future of Unchosen hinges on viewer reception, Fra Fee's enthusiasm for his character and the world Gearey has built suggests there's compelling material waiting in the wings. For now, audiences can immerse themselves in the tense, darkly romantic drama when all episodes arrive on Netflix this month.
