It's been nearly four decades since Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman shared the screen in the 1988 drama Clean and Sober, but the wait is finally over. The two acting legends are set to star together again in Rode to Ruin, a Western thriller that promises to be far more than a simple genre piece.
Keaton, who also directs, stars as U.S. Marshal Henry Tilman, a man who has spent 40 years hunting the killer of his wife. His relentless pursuit leads him to Joseph Mulbery, played by Freeman, a wanted outlaw who is now suffering from memory loss. When Tilman finally catches up with his quarry, he discovers that the truth about his wife's death is more devastating than he ever imagined—and possibly more than either man can survive.

The reunion is a long time coming. In Clean and Sober, Keaton played Daryl, a real estate agent grappling with drug addiction, while Freeman portrayed Craig, a rehabilitation counselor who helps him turn his life around. Though the film earned critical praise, it didn't light up the box office, and the two actors went their separate ways—until now.
Before Rode to Ruin, Keaton and Freeman also lent their voices to the 2025 historical drama American Revolution, but this marks their first live-action collaboration in 38 years. Keaton is currently riding high on the success of Netflix's The Whisper Man, a crime thriller that has become the streamer's most-watched title. Freeman, meanwhile, is part of Taylor Sheridan's espionage series Lioness, where he plays Edward Mullins.
