Hong Kong action cinema has a new champion. The Furious, directed by Kenji Tanagaki, stormed the Toronto International Film Festival last year with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes after its Midnight Madness premiere. Now, ShowtimeSpot has two exclusive first-look images that capture the raw intensity of this martial arts revenge thriller, which hits theaters on June 12 via Lionsgate.
The film follows Wang Wei (Xie Miao), a father whose daughter is kidnapped by a human trafficking ring. When the police prove useless, he takes matters into his own hands. His only ally is Navin (Joe Taslim), a journalist whose wife has also vanished under suspicious circumstances. Together, they rain fury on the criminals, blending the bone-crunching action of The Raid with the relentless drive of Taken.
Our first exclusive image shows Wei and Navin battered but determined, standing back-to-back in a gritty, rain-slicked alley. It's a shot that could be pulled straight from Gareth Evans' classic. Xie Miao, who played Jet Li's on-screen son in The New Legend of Shaolin and My Father Is a Hero, brings decades of martial arts pedigree. Taslim, known for The Raid, Fast & Furious 6, and the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, matches him blow for blow. When these two stance up, carnage follows.
The second image takes a more personal turn, showing Wei beside his daughter Rainy (Yang Enyou). Their expressions reveal the emotional toll of this nightmare—neither will emerge unscathed. It's a reminder that beneath the fists and fury, The Furious is a story about a father's love and a journalist's quest for truth.
The cast is stacked with martial arts royalty. Yayan Ruhian, another The Raid alum who also appeared in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, joins the fray. Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate, Triple Threat), Brian Le (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and Joey Iwanaga (Alice in Borderland) round out the ensemble. Tanagaki directed from a script by Mak Tin Shu, Lei Zhilong, Shum Kwan Sin, and Frank Hui.
In an interview with Collider at TIFF, Tanagaki revealed that the film was shot in just 60 days. One massive fight sequence in a police station took 18 days and every night to complete. That dedication to choreography and technical precision makes The Furious a modern action masterpiece.
