Ella Rubin is having a moment. After starring in hits like Anora and Until Dawn, she's currently leading the #1 show on Prime Video, Sterling Point. But she's not slowing down—she's also set to star in Netflix's upcoming series adaptation of Liz Moore's bestselling novel, The God of the Woods.
In a recent interview with Collider's Perri Nemiroff for Ladies Night, Rubin opened up about the highly anticipated project, revealing that she's just one week away from wrapping production. When asked what drew her to the role, she described it as a departure from anything she's done before.
"It's a very different character for me," Rubin said. "I've never played anybody like this. It's a different story. It's kind of a '70s sort of atmospheric thriller." She went on to describe her character as "deeply brilliant" but also "troubled," with a rich backstory and a sharp, acerbic edge. "She's not mean, but can be kind of acerbic, and I like that about her," Rubin added. "There's a lot of darkness there within her."
The series follows the Van Laar family, whose dark secrets come to light after 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar disappears from their summer camp. Rubin's character, it seems, is at the center of this mystery, making choices that may not always be sympathetic. "I don't think every choice she makes is one that everyone will be in support of," she admitted, "which is something I enjoyed, too."
Rubin also couldn't stop praising her co-stars, including Maya Hawke, Kerry Condon, and Tracy Letts. "Maya Hawke is incredible," she said. "Kerry Condon is going to be… I mean, everybody in this movie is amazing." She also confirmed that Benjamin Walker is part of the ensemble, along with rising stars Nell Fisher, Autumn Molina, and Susannah Perkins.
The showrunners, Liz Hannah and Liz Moore, have Rubin's full confidence. "They just know what they're doing," she said. "It's awesome." With such a talented team and a gripping source material, The God of the Woods is shaping up to be one of Netflix's most anticipated dramas.
