Fans of the Game of Thrones universe have reason to celebrate: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has officially wrapped filming on its second season. The news comes straight from young star Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg, via his Instagram Stories, confirming that the beloved spin-off is one step closer to its highly anticipated return.

The series, which George R.R. Martin has called one of the most faithful adaptations of his work, follows the adventures of Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg. Season 1 premiered on January 18, 2026, to critical acclaim, earning a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. It also became a record-breaking hit for HBO Max, cementing its place as a fan favorite.

Why HBO Should Bring Back His Dark Materials for a Sequel Series
HBO's His Dark Materials may have wrapped, but Philip Pullman's expanded universe offers plenty of material for a revival that could give Lyra's tale the spotlight it deserves.

Renewed even before its debut, Season 2 will adapt The Sworn Sword, the second novella in Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg series. Alongside Claffey and Ansell, the new season introduces Lucy Boynton as Lady Rohanne Webber, Babou Ceesay as Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, and Peter Mullan as Ser Eustace Osgrey. These additions promise to bring fresh intrigue and conflict to the story.

While HBO has yet to announce an official premiere date, the production wrap is a promising sign. Originally expected to finish in June, filming faced delays but is now back on track. Assuming post-production goes smoothly, fans can likely expect the season to arrive in early 2027.

For those needing a refresher, Season 1 ended on a quieter, more emotional note than typical Game of Thrones finales. After surviving the Trial of Seven, which cost Prince Baelor Targaryen his life, Dunk declines royal service to remain a humble hedge knight. He and Egg reaffirm their bond and continue their journey, while Egg's father, Prince Maekar Targaryen, realizes his son has vanished—though he suspects Dunk is behind it. This sets the stage for The Sworn Sword, which finds the duo in the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey during a turbulent time in the Reach.

As the Game of Thrones franchise continues to expand, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stands out for its character-driven storytelling and faithfulness to Martin's source material. With filming wrapped, the wait for Season 2 feels a little shorter. Until then, Season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.
