HBO has found its next big fantasy project, but fans of The Last of Us will have to wait a bit longer. Craig Mazin, the co-creator of HBO's hit post-apocalyptic drama, is officially developing a television series based on the award-winning video game Baldur's Gate 3. However, the production timeline is now clearer thanks to HBO boss Casey Bloys.
Bloys recently confirmed that Mazin will first finish his work on The Last of Us before diving into the Baldur's Gate 3 adaptation. "He's going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur's Gate] when he's got more time," Bloys said. This means the fantasy series won't enter production until after the third and final season of The Last of Us is complete.
The Last of Us Season 3 is currently on a scheduled break due to the World Cup, but the show is expected to return in 2027. Once that season wraps, Mazin will shift his attention to the world of Faerûn. The Baldur's Gate 3 game, which won Game of the Year in 2023, is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe and features a sprawling narrative with deep character customization and branching storylines.
Mazin's track record with HBO is impeccable. He previously created the critically acclaimed miniseries Chernobyl and co-created The Last of Us with Neil Druckmann. Druckmann has since left the series to work on Naughty Dog's next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, leaving Mazin to steer The Last of Us to its conclusion. The third season will adapt Abby's storyline from The Last of Us Part II, with Kaitlyn Dever taking on a larger role.
Details about the Baldur's Gate 3 series remain scarce. No casting, plot specifics, or episode count have been announced. More information is expected later this year or early in 2027, once Mazin is free to focus on the project. The series is one of several fantasy adaptations in development at HBO, which has found success with genre fare like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
For fans of Mazin's work, the wait will be worth it. His ability to blend emotional depth with high-stakes storytelling makes him a perfect fit for the complex world of Baldur's Gate 3. In the meantime, viewers can catch up on The Last of Us Seasons 1 and 2 on HBO Max, and stay tuned for updates on Season 3.
