Craig Mazin has a knack for making audiences laugh and cry—sometimes with sheep. His latest film, The Sheep Detectives, follows a flock of crime-solving sheep who must unravel a murder mystery after their shepherd is killed. But despite the film's charm and critical buzz, Mazin isn't rushing to pen a sequel.

In a recent interview, the writer behind The Last of Us, Chernobyl, and The Hangover sequels opened up about why he thinks he shouldn't push his luck with a follow-up. “I changed as a writer because of this,” Mazin said, referring to the 10-year-old script he wrote between The Hangover and Chernobyl. “It was my transition.”

A Decade in the Making

Mazin first read Leonie Swann's novel 19 years ago, thanks to producer Lindsay Doran. It took years to secure the rights, and he wrote the script a decade ago. “No one meddled with it,” he said, noting that the final film is exactly what he put on the page. The result is a story that blends wit, heart, and humor—a coming-of-age tale where the characters are adult sheep.

“I’ve written a lot of things, but this is the first time I ever wrote something that made me cry,” Mazin admitted. The scene that got him? He didn't specify, but he called it “the most soulful character I could write.”

Why No Sequel?

When asked about a potential sequel, Mazin was candid. “I don’t think I should push my luck,” he said. “This movie is its own genre. It’s a silly talking animal movie, but it’s also quite a bit more. I’m not sure a sequel could capture that same magic.”

He also noted that his career has always been about variety. “I’ve covered every genre at this point. The next thing I’m tackling is very much in the world of fantasy.” That includes a fantasy sequel fever that's sweeping streaming platforms, but Mazin isn't looking to repeat himself.

Adapting for Everyone

Mazin wanted The Sheep Detectives to be a movie “literally anyone on the planet can watch.” That meant balancing deep emotional themes with accessibility for younger audiences. “I had to craft a story to entertain adults while also making it work for kids,” he explained. “The tone was everything.”

He also made changes from the novel, including shifting the focus to the sheep's perspective. “There were aspects of the novel that needed to be adapted and changed,” he said. “But the heart of it—the innocence of sheep facing difficult realities—that stayed.”

The film features an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Chris O'Dowd. Mazin praised their performances, especially O'Dowd's soulful sheep. “They just delivered,” he said.

What's Next for Mazin?

While Mazin won't be writing a sequel to The Sheep Detectives, he's not done with adaptations. He's currently working on a fantasy project and still holds out hope that his Pirates of the Caribbean script will get made. “I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” he said. “I’ve got to change it up.”

For now, fans can enjoy The Sheep Detectives as a standalone gem—a film that Mazin says “defies all expectations.” And if you're wondering whether he'll ever return to the flock, the answer is clear: don't count on it.
