For decades, BioWare has been synonymous with choice-driven role-playing games, from the moral dilemmas of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to the galaxy-saving decisions in Mass Effect and the political intrigue of Dragon Age. Now, the studio's story—including its recent closure—is set to be told in a feature documentary.
Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, an independent film from Fennessey Films and Score G Productions, is currently in production. Written and directed by Akash Sherman, the documentary will explore the studio's unlikely origins—founded by three medical doctors in Edmonton in 1995—and its evolution into a powerhouse of narrative gaming. The project has been in the works for two years, with filmmakers interviewing key figures before Electronic Arts announced the studio's closure last month.
The documentary will feature interviews with all three founders—Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip—as well as Casey Hudson, the director behind Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, and Jennifer Hale, the voice of the female Commander Shepard. Longtime developers David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Mark Darrah, and Mac Walters also appear, offering perspectives from writing, design, and leadership.
Producers Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie plan to cover the studio's final chapter alongside its rise, giving fans a comprehensive look at how BioWare's games came to life. The documentary is targeting a 2027 world premiere at major festivals, with Super Channel commissioning it in Canada and Jhod Cardinal of Upstream Flix handling worldwide sales.
Fans are invited to contribute their own memories, photos, and videos through the documentary's official website, a fitting tribute to a studio that made players feel like their choices mattered. For those who have spent hours agonizing over whether to save the council or let them die, this documentary promises to be a nostalgic journey.
As we await the documentary, fans can revisit some of the studio's greatest moments, like the best series finales in TV history, or explore other flawless war films that capture similar emotional weight. For those who love a good mystery with a satisfying conclusion, BioWare's legacy is a reminder of how storytelling can leave a lasting impact.
