Before his passing in 2023, Norman Lear left an indelible mark on television with classics like All in the Family and The Jeffersons. Now, one of his final cinematic endeavors is set to reach audiences. Before We Forget, a heartfelt romantic drama starring Juan Pablo Di Pace, will arrive on digital and DVD on October 20, and we have the exclusive first trailer.
The film, which also screened at festivals under the title Duino, is a labor of love for Di Pace, who co-wrote and co-directed alongside Andrés Pepe Estrada. Di Pace, known for his role in Mamma Mia!, also stars in the lead role. Lear served as an executive producer, joining a team that includes Jim Burba, Kent Robert Gibbons, Bob Hayes, Margret H. Huddleston, Massimiliano Milic, Brent Miller, and Stephanie Slack. Di Pace produced with Guillermo Escalona, Amanda Lenker Doyle, and Alvaro R. Valente.
The trailer weaves between two timelines. In 1997, a young Argentine student named Matias (played by newcomer Santiago Madrussan) is studying at an international school in Duino, Italy. There, he forms a deep bond with a Swedish classmate, Alex (Oscar Morgan), which soon blossoms into something more. Complicating matters, Alex's sister Kathrine (Julia Bender) also harbors feelings for Matias.
Two decades later, Matias (now played by Di Pace) is a film producer looking to revisit his past. When he stumbles upon an old VHS tape of his time in Italy, he's transported back to those formative days. Determined to reconnect with the now-grown Alex (August Wittgenstein) and Kathrine (Krista Kosonen), Matias gets a second chance to rewrite the ending of his own story.
For those unfamiliar with Lear's legacy, he was a titan of television, breaking barriers with politically charged sitcoms that tackled social issues head-on. Beyond TV, he executive produced beloved films like The Princess Bride and Fried Green Tomatoes. His final projects, including Before We Forget, continue to showcase his commitment to storytelling.
As we await the film's release, fans of romantic dramas and Lear's work will find much to anticipate. The trailer promises an emotional journey through memory, love, and the choices that define us.
