Over forty years after it first terrified audiences, the BBC's most devastating sci-fi film is making a triumphant return. Threads, the unflinching dramatization of nuclear war's aftermath in Britain, is set to receive a lavish 4K UHD special edition this summer. The release arrives just as anticipation builds for a reboot from Warp Films, the studio behind Netflix's Adolescence.

Originally broadcast on BBC Two on September 23, 1984, Threads remains one of the most realistic and disturbing depictions of nuclear conflict ever committed to film. The movie explores the medical, economic, social, and environmental consequences of a nuclear strike on Britain, offering little hope and a famously bleak ending. It holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has only grown in reputation over the decades.

What's in the 4K Package?

Severin Films is handling the release, which arrives as a three-disc special edition on July 28, 2026. The 4K UHD transfer has been scanned from the original 16mm A/B rolls, ensuring the highest possible quality. Preorders are already live on the Severin Films website for $45.

The first disc contains the 4K UHD version of the film with two audio commentary tracks. The first features director Mick Jackson, writer/programmer Kier-La Janisse, and Severin's David Gregory. The second commentary brings together actress Karen Meagher and television historian Simon Farquhar.

Disc two is a standard Blu-ray that includes both commentary tracks, a U.S. trailer, and interviews with Meagher, director of photography Andrew Dunn, production designer Christopher Robilliard, and writer Stephen Thrower.

The third disc is a highlight: a feature-length documentary titled Survivors: The Spectre of Threads. This documentary follows the production of the film and its lasting impact on the people of Sheffield, England, where it was shot. It also includes an interview with Julie McDowall, author of Attack Warning Red! How Britain Prepared For Nuclear War.

Why Threads Still Matters
