Some TV shows just refuse to fade away, and Baywatch is the ultimate example. The iconic lifeguard drama, which ruled the airwaves in the 1990s, is officially making a comeback. Fox has announced that the highly anticipated sequel series will premiere on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
The original Baywatch first hit screens in 1989 and ran for over a decade, becoming the most-watched TV show in the world at its peak in 1996. It spawned spin-offs, TV movies, and a 2017 theatrical film starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. Now, the franchise is returning to its roots with a sequel that continues the original storyline.
The new series was first announced in March 2024 by Fremantle and Fox Entertainment, with a formal 12-episode order coming in September 2025. The show will follow an adult Hobie Buchannon, the son of original star David Hasselhoff's character Mitch Buchannon. Stephen Amell, known for his role as the Green Arrow, will take on the part of Hobie, who has followed in his father's footsteps to become a Baywatch captain.
Joining Amell is a fresh cast of lifeguards, including Jessica Belkin as Hobie's daughter Charlie, Hassie Harrison as Nat, Shay Mitchell as Trina, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke, and Brooks Nader as Selene. But the nostalgia factor is high, as several original cast members are returning. Erika Eleniak reprises her role as Shauni McClain, now a Santa Monica city councilwoman who helps Hobie kick off the annual Beach Games. David Chokachi is back as Cody Madison, who now runs a beachside bar and grill called The Shoreline. Michael Bergin and Kelly Packard also return as J.D. and April Giminski, respectively.
The new Baywatch promises to deliver the same mix of sun, sand, and high-stakes rescues that made the original a cultural phenomenon. With a blend of fresh faces and beloved veterans, the series aims to capture the spirit of the '90s while appealing to a modern audience. As the show gears up for its January debut, fans can expect plenty of slow-motion runs and dramatic saves.
For those who can't wait, there's plenty of other entertainment to dive into. If you're into epic comebacks, check out Rocky's 50th anniversary return to theaters. Or if you're in the mood for a different kind of reboot, Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe might be worth a look.
With its mix of nostalgia and new energy, the Baywatch reboot is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated TV events of 2027. Mark your calendars for January 6, and get ready to hit the beach.
