For seven years, Disney+ has been the home of live-action Star Wars, with a new series or season arriving every year since The Mandalorian launched in 2019. But that streak is about to end. At Disney's 2026 TV Upfronts, Rosario Dawson confirmed that Ahsoka Season 2 won't debut until 2027, marking the first calendar year without a new live-action Star Wars show on the streamer.
The delay signals a major strategic shift for Lucasfilm. While Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord has become a critical darling and The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to hit theaters, the studio is clearly prioritizing the big screen. As reported earlier, the second season of Ahsoka will arrive in early 2027, aligning with the franchise's 50th anniversary.
Why Lucasfilm Is Pausing Live-Action TV
According to a 2023 report from The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm has been actively developing a new slate of Star Wars films, including Starfighter and a Jedi origins story directed by James Mangold. The move back to theaters is a full-circle moment: The Mandalorian kicked off Disney+'s Star Wars dominance, and now its spinoff film will lead the franchise's return to the silver screen.
This doesn't mean Lucasfilm is abandoning television entirely. Animation remains a strong focus, with Shadow Lord and the anthology Star Wars Visions continuing to push boundaries. Ahsoka itself owes its existence to animation, having originated in The Clone Wars and serving as a sequel to Star Wars Rebels. The animated side of the franchise continues to shape the future of Star Wars storytelling.
Delaying Ahsoka Could Pay Off
While fans may be disappointed by the wait, the timing could work in the show's favor. 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, and creator Dave Filoni reportedly wants the season to be in top form for the milestone. Footage shown at the Upfronts was described as action-packed, with Dawson promising, "This season, the battles are bigger and the stakes are higher."
There's also a larger narrative reason for the delay. Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy teased in 2020 that The Mandalorian and Ahsoka would lead into a feature film. Season 1 of Ahsoka set the stage by bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) back from exile, and a theatrical film could build on that story—especially if The Mandalorian & Grogu proves successful.
For now, Disney+ still has plenty of Star Wars content to enjoy, including the acclaimed Andor and the animated Shadow Lord. But the end of the seven-year streak marks a new chapter for the franchise—one that looks to the stars, not just the small screen.
Season 1 of Ahsoka is available to stream on Disney+.
