Think you've seen every great action movie? Think again. Some of the most pulse-pounding, bone-crunching, and visually stunning action films have flown under the radar—overshadowed by blockbusters, limited releases, or just plain bad timing. But these hidden gems are the ones you discover years later and immediately wonder how you missed them. From Hong Kong classics to Indonesian ultraviolence, here are seven action movies you've been sleeping on.
Raging Fire (2021)
Donnie Yen stars as Cheung, a veteran Hong Kong police officer investigating a string of violent robberies carried out by a crew of ex-cops led by his former protégé, Yau (Nicholas Tse). Yau wants revenge after Cheung put him in jail for killing a suspect. This is the final film from legendary director Benny Chan, and it's a masterclass in modern Hong Kong action. The fights are brutal, the explosions are massive, and Yen delivers exactly the kind of physical, commanding performance you want. In an era of CGI-heavy action, Raging Fire feels refreshingly bone-crackingly real.
Den of Thieves (2018)
Gerard Butler plays Big Nick, a reckless cop, while Pablo Schreiber is Ray Merrimen, an ex-Marine leading a crew to rob the Federal Reserve. This heist thriller takes inspiration from Heat but leans into something dirtier and more aggressive. The gunfights are loud and chaotic, especially the climactic downtown shootout—some of the best tactical action in recent American crime cinema. It's the kind of film that understands cops and criminals often share the same mentality, just on opposite sides of the law. A sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is on the way.
Black Rain (1989)
Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia play detectives who escort a yakuza member back to Japan, only for him to escape. Forced to navigate Osaka's neon-lit underworld, they uncover a web of corruption. Directed by Ridley Scott, this neo-noir action film is moody and cool, with a Hans Zimmer score that pulses with tension. Scott turns Osaka into a glowing industrial maze, and the action is practical and grounded. Though it had mixed reviews on release, Black Rain has become a cult classic.
The Shadow Strays (2024)
From Timo Tjahjanto, the director of The Night Comes For Us and the upcoming Nobody 2, comes this relentless Indonesian martial arts film. A teenage assassin known only as 13 (Aurora Ribero) breaks the rules of her covert organization to protect a young boy from a crime syndicate. The action scenes are long, savage, and packed with insane stunt work. Visually stunning and emotionally resonant, it's like The Raid turned up to 11. If you love ultraviolent spectacle with heart, this is for you.
Smokin' Aces (2006)
A dying mob boss puts a million-dollar bounty on flashy magician-turned-snitch Buddy Israel (Jeremy Piven), and every assassin, bounty hunter, and psychopath converges on his hotel. FBI agents Carruthers (Ray Liotta) and Messner (Ryan Reynolds) try to keep order. This film has so much swagger and insanity that it's mindboggling it didn't become a cult favorite. It's a wild ride that blends dark comedy with over-the-top action.
