Remember that Family Guy moment where Peter says he didn't care for The Godfather because 'it insists upon itself'? That's the vibe here. Some movies get praised to the heavens, but when you finally watch them, they just don't click. It's not hate—it's a shrug. These films are fine, decent, even admirable, but they're not the masterpieces everyone says they are.
We're not talking about bad movies. These are respected, often award-winning films that just don't deliver that extra spark. If you disagree, that's cool—art is subjective. But if you've ever nodded along when someone called a classic 'overrated,' you'll get it.
10. 'Opening Night' (1977)
John Cassavetes was a pioneer of indie filmmaking, but his movies can be more impressive than engaging. Opening Night is a rambling drama about a theater troupe unraveling before a premiere. It's long, self-indulgent, and doesn't build tension like his better works (A Woman Under the Influence). Gena Rowlands gives a strong performance, but the film feels like a chore.
9. 'Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles' (1975)
Chantal Akerman's anti-epic is a three-and-a-half-hour study of a housewife's routine. It's deliberately repetitive and slow, mirroring the emptiness of its protagonist's life. Thematically clever, yes, but it asks a lot of the viewer and gives little in return. It's a waste of time—but at least a thematically effective one.
8. 'Secrets & Lies' (1996)
Mike Leigh's realistic dramas are often dour and slow. Secrets & Lies follows a woman who reconnects with her birth mother, uncovering family secrets. It's well-acted but not particularly exciting or entertaining. It's fine, just fine.
7. 'All About Eve' (1950)
This Oscar-winning film about snarky theater people runs nearly 2.5 hours. If you love the dialogue and performances, it's glorious. If not, it drags. Technically well-crafted, but it doesn't add up to much. It's a classic that leaves you cold.
6. 'Ordet' (1955)
A slow, faith-based drama about a family grappling with religion. It's atmospheric and haunting, but hard to penetrate. Unless you deeply relate to the characters' spiritual struggles, it's a slog. Good, not great.
