Quentin Tarantino may have been quiet on the directing front since 2019, but his filmography continues to dominate streaming platforms. This October, one of his most celebrated works, Django Unchained, has officially landed on Prime Video, offering subscribers a chance to experience the nearly three-hour Western epic from the comfort of their own homes.
Tarantino has built a reputation for crafting unforgettable cinema, and Django Unchained stands as a testament to his unique storytelling. The 2012 film, which blends brutal action with sharp social commentary, stars Jamie Foxx as the titular Django, a freed slave turned bounty hunter, and Christoph Waltz as the charismatic Dr. King Schultz. The cast also features standout performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, and Kerry Washington.
The film was a critical and commercial triumph, earning over $400 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. It also garnered two Academy Awards: one for Waltz's supporting performance and another for Tarantino's original screenplay. Both also took home BAFTA honors, further cementing the film's legacy.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, Django Unchained follows Django as he teams up with Schultz, a German bounty hunter, to capture a group of vicious criminals. After their mission succeeds, Schultz frees Django, and the pair embark on a journey across the South to bring the most-wanted outlaws to justice. Their travels eventually lead them to the infamous plantation of Calvin Candie, where Django's long-lost wife, played by Kerry Washington, remains enslaved.
The film's arrival on Prime Video comes as part of a Howdy subscription, and it's also available on MovieSphere by Lionsgate. This gives viewers multiple options to dive into Tarantino's dark and gripping tale.
Tarantino's career has been marked by a relatively small but impactful body of work—just nine films—yet he's managed to leave an indelible mark on Hollywood. His recent work, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, earned Brad Pitt an Oscar and grossed over $400 million, and Pitt is set to reprise his role in the upcoming The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
As fans await Tarantino's next project, set to hit IMAX in November, Django Unchained serves as a reminder of his mastery. Whether you're revisiting the film or discovering it for the first time, it's a must-watch for any cinephile.
