When X-Men '97 debuted two years ago, it faced sky-high expectations as a direct sequel to the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series. But the show didn't just meet those expectations—it shattered them, becoming one of Marvel's most daring and electrifying projects. As Season 2 prepares to land on Disney+ on July 1, here's a refresher on the key events that set the stage for the next chapter. (Disney+ has already ordered a third season, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.)

Magneto Takes the Helm

About a year after Professor Charles Xavier fakes his death and leaves Earth to heal with the Shi'ar, the X-Men grapple with their responsibilities to a world on the brink of political chaos. Scott Summers and Jean Grey, expecting a child, consider leaving the team for a peaceful life. But duty calls when teenage mutant Roberto da Costa needs protection from anti-mutant forces like Henry Peter Gyrich and the Friends of Humanity. The X-Men dispatch a Sentinel squad with ease.

The Clone Wars: Jean Grey vs. Madelyne Pryor
