Will Smith is gearing up for a major return to the screen with his upcoming action thriller Supermax, and the project has just hit a significant milestone. Filming has officially wrapped, bringing the high-stakes prison murder mystery one step closer to audiences. The movie marks Smith's first big-screen outing since Bad Boys: Ride or Die stormed theaters in 2024, grossing over $405 million worldwide.
Directed by David Gordon Green, known for his recent Halloween trilogy, Supermax pairs Smith with AnnaSophia Robb (Rebel Ridge) as two FBI agents sent to a maximum-security supermax prison to investigate a baffling murder that seems impossible to have occurred within those walls. The cast is stacked with talent, including Jaafar Jackson (Michael), Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Eric and Lyle Menendez Story), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter). The script comes from David Weil (Hunters) and David J. Rosen, with production handled by The Picture Company's Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, alongside Westbrook Studios' Smith and Adam Fishbach.
The wrap was celebrated by the film's creative director, Ariana Whittingham, who shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram featuring the cast and crew. While an official release date hasn't been announced, Supermax is set to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. The studio has been mixing its theatrical and streaming strategies, releasing titles like Project Hail Mary and Masters of the Universe in cinemas, while sending others like The Runner and The Love Hypothesis straight to Prime Video. Given Smith's history with streaming—he starred in Bright and Emancipation for the platform—it's possible Supermax could follow a similar path, though a theatrical release remains a strong possibility.
Green's previous film, the holiday comedy Nutcrackers, landed on Hulu, but Supermax represents a return to the action-thriller genre for the director. The project also continues Smith's recent trend of choosing high-concept, star-driven vehicles, and fans are eager to see him back in a leading role.
What's Next for Will Smith?
Beyond Supermax, Smith has several projects in the pipeline. A sequel to his apocalyptic sci-fi hit I Am Legend is reportedly in development, with Michael B. Jordan attached to star alongside Smith. The sequel is said to follow the alternate ending of the original film, where Smith's character, Robert Neville, survives. Akiva Goldsman is writing the script, and Steven Caple Jr. is set to direct.
Smith was also previously attached to Sugar Bandits, a thriller directed by Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), but he exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. With Supermax now in post-production, fans can expect more updates on its release soon. For now, the excitement is building for what could be one of the most talked-about action films of the year.
