The Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale delivered a gut-punch of an ending—Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) finally unmasked himself as Daredevil, leading a protest that forced Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) to step down. But for many fans, one question lingered: where was Frank Castle? The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) teamed up with Matt in Season 1, yet he was conspicuously absent during the martial law chaos of Season 2. At first glance, it feels like a glaring oversight. But dig deeper, and you'll see that keeping Frank off the board was the smartest move Marvel could have made.
A Non-Violent Victory for Daredevil
The finale's climax hinged on Matt's unwavering belief in justice—not vengeance. After a brutal street fight, Matt convinced Fisk to surrender voluntarily, a moment that resonated because it was bloodless. If Frank had been there, that scene would have ended very differently. The Punisher doesn't do negotiations; he does bullets. His presence would have turned a triumph of moral conviction into a bloody shootout, undermining everything Daredevil stands for. As we've seen in Daredevil: Born Again's brutal fights, the show knows how to deliver grit—but it also knows when to pull back.
Frank Castle Deserves More Than a Cameo
Throwing Frank into the mix would have been a disservice to the character. The season already featured a glorified cameo from Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), who felt diminished and depowered. The same fate could have befallen Frank if he were shoehorned into a story that didn't need him. Instead, Marvel is saving the Punisher for his own standalone film, The Punisher: One Last Kill, which Jon Bernthal helped write. That movie promises the purest, most violent version of Frank Castle—exactly what fans want. As Bullseye's MCU future teases Punisher showdowns, it's clear the character's best moments are still ahead.
A More Coherent MCU
The Punisher's absence also makes the MCU more coherent. With New York under martial law, why wasn't Spider-Man (Tom Holland) around? The same logic applies: not every hero needs to show up for every crisis. Spider-Man: Homecoming's return to Disney+ charts reminds us that Peter Parker has his own battles. By keeping Frank away, Daredevil: Born Again stayed focused on Matt's journey—a story about faith, justice, and the power of a city united. The Punisher will return, but only when the story demands his particular brand of chaos.
So don't mourn Frank's absence. Celebrate it. It means Marvel is finally letting characters breathe, and when the Punisher does come back—in One Last Kill on May 12—it'll be worth the wait.
