Since its debut in early 2022, Reacher has become Prime Video's crown jewel, thanks to Alan Ritchson's towering performance and its relentless action. But while fans count down to Season 4 later this year, there's another series that scratches that same itch—Marvel's The Punisher, now streaming on Disney+.
Jon Bernthal first stepped into Frank Castle's boots in Daredevil Season 2, and the character quickly earned his own standalone series. Two seasons aired between 2016 and 2019, followed by a guest spot in Daredevil: Born Again and a 2026 special, The Punisher: One Last Kill. Bernthal's broken vigilante is a far cry from Jack Reacher's invincible hero, but both shows deliver the same adrenaline-pumping, bone-crunching thrills.
What Is 'The Punisher' About?
The series follows former Marine Frank Castle as he transforms into a ruthless vigilante after his wife and children are brutally murdered. Beyond the blood-soaked action, The Punisher dives deep into Frank's fractured psyche, exploring grief, PTSD, and the heavy cost of violence. His quest for vengeance becomes a way to cope with unimaginable loss, but it also drags him into a sprawling conspiracy tied to his military past—a web of corruption, covert ops, and organized crime.
Frank is aided by David "Micro" Lieberman (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, now famous from The Bear), a former intelligence analyst in hiding, while Homeland Security agent Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah) pursues her own investigation. The story is also shaped by Frank's fraught relationship with his former best friend Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) and by Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), one of the few people who can reach the man behind the Punisher mask.
'The Punisher' Is Darker and Heavier Than 'Reacher'
While both shows center on a lone, hyper-competent man taking on corrupt systems, their tones couldn't be more different. Jack Reacher thrives on being the smartest, most indestructible guy in the room—viewers tune in to watch him dismantle bad guys with cool efficiency. Frank Castle, by contrast, is driven by trauma and vengeance. His fights are messier, bloodier, and emotionally draining. He's a wounded, often destructible protagonist, and the show lingers on the psychological toll of his violence.
Collider's review of The Punisher: One Last Kill called it "unrelentingly vicious," noting that within the first ten minutes, an unhoused man is beaten while his dog is thrown into traffic. The violence is stomach-churning, especially when Frank isn't there to save the day. That rawness sets The Punisher apart from Reacher's more polished, almost superheroic action.
Still, fans of the Prime Video hit should give this Marvel series a shot. Bernthal delivers one of his best performances, and the story shines a light on the darker, heavier side of being a vigilante. With Frank Castle set to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, now is the perfect time to catch up. For more great thrillers, check out our list of the best thriller video games of all time.
