Good news for fans of the Staten Island vampire roommates: the long-awaited sequel to What We Do in the Shadows is finally howling its way into production. In an exclusive update, co-writer and star Jemaine Clement has confirmed that We're Wolves—the spin-off focusing on the film's memorable werewolf pack—is officially moving forward.
Speaking with ShowtimeSpot, Clement revealed that the project has been in various stages of development for years, but now has a clear path ahead. "We've been working on the script, and it's really coming together," he said. "The werewolves have always been a fan favorite, and we're excited to give them their own story."
The original 2014 mockumentary, co-written and directed by Clement and Taika Waititi, became a cult hit for its deadpan humor and quirky take on vampire lore. It spawned a successful TV series of the same name on FX, which ran for five seasons and earned multiple Emmy nominations. But the film's sequel has been a different beast entirely—one that's taken over a decade to materialize.
We're Wolves will shift focus from the vampires to the werewolf pack led by Anton (played by Rhys Darby), who famously warned the vampires about the dangers of "swearwolves" and "what we do in the shadows." Clement confirmed that Darby is expected to reprise his role, along with other original cast members. "Rhys is a genius, and the pack has such great chemistry," Clement added. "We can't wait to get them all back together."
The sequel's development has been a topic of speculation for years, with fans eagerly awaiting any news. Clement's update provides the first concrete confirmation that the project is no longer stuck in development hell. While no official release date has been set, production is expected to begin in early 2027.
In the meantime, fans can catch up on the original film and the FX series, both streaming on Hulu. The series finale left the door open for more adventures, and Clement hinted that We're Wolves might connect to the TV show in unexpected ways. "There's a lot of shared universe potential," he said. "We're keeping it all in the family."
For those who can't get enough of the mockumentary style, ShowtimeSpot also has an exclusive sneak peek at 'Adventure Time: Side Quests', another beloved franchise returning to Hulu and Disney+. And if you're in the mood for more supernatural comedy, check out our coverage of Netflix's cozy 'Gilmore Girls' replacement that's become a streaming sensation.
As for We're Wolves, Clement promises it will capture the same offbeat spirit as the original. "It's going to be ridiculous, heartfelt, and full of werewolf hijinks," he said. "We're not just making a sequel—we're making something that stands on its own."
