Paul Bettany has been a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning, first as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. in the Iron Man and Avengers films, then stepping into the physical role of Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Over the past decade, Vision's arc has been defined by his tragic romance with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), a love story that reached its heartbreaking peak in WandaVision. Who can forget the iconic line, "What is grief if not love persevering?"
Now, VisionQuest picks up with Vision on a quest to rediscover his purpose and understand humanity after his memories—but not the emotions tied to them—are restored. To do this, he enlists the help of fellow Stark AIs, including Friday (Orla Brady), Edith (Emily Hampshire), and the villainous Ultron (James Spader), whom he surprisingly spared at the end of Age of Ultron. His mission becomes urgent when a hitman named Paladin (Todd Stashwick) uses Vision's son Tommy (Ruaridh Mollica) as bait to lure him out of hiding.
In a recent interview, Bettany delved into the show's twists, including the shocking death in the premiere, the emotional reunion with Tommy, and the intense Paladin fight. Here's what he had to say.
The Premiere Death That Changes Everything
The first episode of VisionQuest delivers a gut-punch with the sudden death of Fiona, a character who quickly becomes important to Vision. Bettany explains that this loss hits Vision hard, serving as "yet another example of man's inhumanity." He adds, "I think he is destroyed by it." Vision has always believed in the beauty of human imperfection, but moments like this challenge his faith in humanity. "I definitely think those moments when they happen to Vision are very hard for him to cope with," Bettany says.
Tommy's Echo of Wanda's Words
In Episode 2, Tommy echoes Wanda's famous line about grief and love, a moment that resonates deeply with Vision. Bettany notes that Vision is being asked to accept that he has a human son, which is "a really big ask for a supercomputer with super intelligence." He's in denial, struggling to believe it, which makes the reunion scene all the more poignant. "He sees somebody who may or may not be his real human son and is also a link to Wanda, whom I think he is secretly mourning," Bettany reveals.
Behind the Paladin Fight
The fight scene where Vision transforms into his White Vision form and takes on Paladin is a standout moment. Bettany laughs about the practicalities: "Obviously, I can't actually pick Todd up with one hand and hold him by the neck." The scene required wires and careful choreography, but the result is a gritty, intense confrontation that Bettany compares to a scene from Heat. "It was fun," he adds.
The Role of the AIs
Ultron's claim that the AIs are only there to make Vision feel heard, not to offer real counsel, raises questions. Bettany agrees, suggesting Vision is "living somewhat of a lie." He tells himself he's learning about mankind by day and analyzing data by night, but really, he's hiding from the world. "He is frightened to push out into a larger world, which is, of course, what he is forced to do," Bettany explains.
