After a two-year wait, the Gaang is finally returning to our screens. Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is set to premiere on June 25, and the streaming giant has just released a tantalizing featurette that gives fans their best look yet at one of the most beloved characters in the franchise: Toph Beifong.
The new footage, shared exclusively with Collider, dives deep into how the blind Earthbending prodigy was brought to life. Miya Cech, who was officially cast as Toph last year, is shown training extensively to master the character's unique physicality. The featurette reveals that the production team sifted through over 6,000 submissions before finding Cech, who executive producer Jabbar Raisani says immediately embodied the character's bluntness and connection to the earth during chemistry reads. For Cech, who grew up watching the original animated series, landing the role was a dream come true.
One of the biggest challenges for Cech was accurately portraying Toph's blindness. The actress worked closely with blindness consultant Joe Strechay to plan every touch and glance, ensuring that her performance would convey how Toph navigates the world through vibrations in the earth. As Sokka (Ian Ousley) notes in the series, Toph's mastery of seismic sense makes it nearly impossible to tell she's blind. The featurette shows Cech hurling rocks and delivering harsh lessons to "Twinkletoes" (Aang) with a confidence that proves she doesn't need to see to fight.
Season 2 adapts Book 2 of the original Nickelodeon series, sending Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), and Sokka to the Earth Kingdom in search of an Earthbending master. The stakes are higher than ever: Azula (Elizabeth Yu) has already captured Omashu and its king, Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar), setting the stage for a massive conflict with Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). Along the way, the group will explore iconic locations like the sprawling city of Ba Sing Se and encounter a host of fan-favorite characters.
Beyond Toph, the season expands the world in other exciting ways. The cast also includes Dallas Liu as Zuko, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh. For those who can't get enough of the Avatar universe, the franchise is also expanding into gaming with Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, a hand-drawn 1v1 fighter arriving one month after the season premiere. And in October, the animated film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will debut on Paramount+.

With Toph's arrival, Season 2 promises to be a game-changer for the live-action series. The featurette makes it clear that the team has poured immense care into honoring the character's legacy while making her feel fresh for a new generation. As Cormier puts it, he's excited for viewers to see how Toph interacts with Aang during their training, and Cech's performance looks set to steal the show.
