Tom Hanks is no stranger to World War II storytelling, and he's about to dive back into the deep end with a sequel to his 2020 naval thriller Greyhound. The Oscar winner recently offered a major update on the project, revealing plot details that promise a more introspective and harrowing follow-up.
In a new interview with TIME, Hanks confirmed that Greyhound 2 is already shot—filmed in Australia—and will shift focus from the relentless tension of convoy command to the psychological aftermath of survival. The first film, based on C.S. Forester's novel The Good Shepherd, followed U.S. Navy Commander Ernest Krause (Hanks) as he shepherded an Allied convoy across the Atlantic while dodging German U-boats. Now, the sequel asks a deeper question: what does it truly mean to survive?
“The first Greyhound was all about dealing with the backbone-crushing stress of the job at hand,” Hanks said. “The second one, what we’re establishing is: What is the difference between surviving and not surviving?”
Hanks revealed that the sequel draws inspiration from a real-life naval survival story—a ship that endured an astonishing 19 separate bombings in a single morning. “We based much of the second film on a true story about a ship that, completely by itself, somehow survived 19 different bombings within the course of an early morning,” he explained. “What is survival? Survival is perseverance. Survival is behavior and procedure and an all-encompassing faith in the ability to solve one damn thing after another. Isn’t that kind of like life itself?”
The original Greyhound was a surprise hit for Apple TV+, praised for its taut, realistic depiction of naval warfare and Hanks' commanding performance. The sequel promises to expand that world while digging into the emotional toll of combat. Hanks returns as writer and star, with the supporting cast including Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, Elisabeth Shue, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Karl Glusman.
This isn't Hanks' only WWII project. He recently executive-produced the docuseries World War II With Tom Hanks for HISTORY, and his production company has been behind acclaimed series like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air. But Greyhound 2 marks a rare sequel for the actor, who typically avoids revisiting his own hits.
For fans of war dramas, the update is a welcome sign that Hanks isn't done exploring the human cost of conflict. The first Greyhound is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and while no release date has been announced for the sequel, Hanks' comments suggest it's further along than many expected.
In other sequel news, Jim Carrey is confirmed for a 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' sequel after 26 years, and Mike Myers has officially announced 'Austin Powers 4'. Meanwhile, Illumination's Chris Meledandri has shared a key update on the animated Barbie movie.
