Harry Bosch may still be lurking around the edges of the expanding universe, but fans have been clamoring for a proper return of the iconic detective in a feature-length adventure. Now, Titus Welliver has offered a major update on the long-rumored standalone Bosch movie, confirming that while nothing is official yet, the desire to make it happen is very much alive.
Speaking at the Italian Global Series festival, Welliver told ScreenRant that he doesn't have concrete news to share, but stressed that “the intent is there” to bring his version of Bosch back as the lead. The actor, who played the role for seven seasons on Bosch and three more on Bosch: Legacy, acknowledged that fans want more than just cameos or spin-offs.
“I think that would be what we would ultimately want to do, would be a standalone Bosch film,” Welliver said. “Not to get closure, because to quote Harry Bosch, ‘Closure is a myth,’ but people want more. They want Bosch, they want to see him again, and I think that Ballard doesn’t give them enough sustenance. They want to see the original thing. They want the integrity of what birthed that universe of those other shows. That’s the tried and true original product.”
Welliver pointed to the success of Jack Ryan: Ghost War, Prime Video's feature-length epilogue to the John Krasinski series, as proof that a major streaming show can successfully make the jump to a movie. The actor has continued to appear in the Bosch universe, including a role in the Maggie Q-led Ballard, where he's expected to appear in three episodes of Season 2. Meanwhile, MGM+ is moving forward with Bosch: Start of Watch, a prequel series starring Cameron Monaghan (Gotham) as a 26-year-old Harry Bosch during his first year as an LAPD beat cop in the 1990s. First Look at Cameron Monaghan as Young Harry Bosch in MGM+ Prequel 'Start of Watch' offers a glimpse at the younger version of the character.
Despite these projects, Welliver believes they won't fully satisfy fans who want to see the seasoned, world-weary Harry Bosch they've come to love. With countless stories from Michael Connelly's novels still untouched by any adaptation, there's plenty of material to give the character a proper send-off. The actor has also been busy with other roles, including a part in Titus Welliver Joins 'The Night Agent' Season 4 as a Dogged DOJ Prosecutor, but the Bosch movie remains a priority for him.
While a standalone Bosch movie has not yet been officially announced, Welliver's comments suggest that the project is far from dead. The actor's passion for the character and the franchise's enduring popularity make it a strong candidate for a greenlight. For now, fans will have to wait, but the message is clear: Harry Bosch isn't done yet.
