The 2000s were a mixed bag for cinema. While the decade gave us masterpieces like The Departed and There Will Be Blood, it also unleashed some of the most painful R-rated films ever made. Between the rise of unnecessary sequels, Oscar-bait dramas that missed the mark, and sci-fi experiments that fell flat, there's plenty to cringe at. Here are six R-rated disasters that prove even the best decades have their low points.

6. 'Analyze That' (2002)

When Analyze This hit theaters in 1999, it was a clever blend of mafia violence and therapy humor, with Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal playing off each other perfectly. The sequel, Analyze That, threw all that chemistry out the window. Instead of the sharp wit of the original, we got a convoluted plot that turned Crystal into a globe-trotting therapist and De Niro into a cartoonish mobster with zero menace. It's one of the worst comedy sequels ever, and it's no surprise that a third film never materialized. The 80s gave us E.T. and The Goonies, but also a treasure trove of near-perfect kids movies that have since faded into obscurity. Here are 7 you need to revisit.

5. 'Ghosts of Mars' (2001)

John Carpenter, the master of horror, hit a career low with Ghosts of Mars. Unlike his earlier misfires that at least had some redeeming qualities, this sci-fi action film is a complete dud. Natasha Henstridge fails to capture the toughness of Carpenter's iconic heroines, and Ice Cube and Jason Statham feel miscast in a world that's never fully realized. The film makes Mars look boring, and the titular ghosts are barely present. It's a sad footnote for a director who gave us so many classics.

4. 'The Final Destination' (2009)

The Final Destination franchise is known for creative, suspenseful death scenes, but the fourth installment, The Final Destination, is a mess. Released in the early days of 3D, it relies on cheap pop-out gags instead of genuine tension. The kills are so over-the-top and gory that they become boring, and the 3D effects look laughable compared to Avatar, which came out the same year. It's the one film fans skip when binging the series.

3. 'Lions for Lambs' (2007)

Robert Redford's Lions for Lambs is a textbook example of Oscar-bait gone wrong. Despite a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep, the film is a preachy, talky mess that tries to tackle the War on Terror but ends up feeling like a lecture. It's a film that thinks it's profound but is actually just dull. For more on how prestige films can fail, see our article on How Did These 10 Movies Actually Win Best Picture?

2. 'The Love Guru' (2008)

Mike Myers' The Love Guru is a comedy that misses on every level. The jokes are juvenile, the accents are cringeworthy, and the plot is nonsensical. It's a film that tries to recapture the magic of Austin Powers but ends up being one of the most embarrassing R-rated comedies of the decade. It's a reminder that even comedy legends can have off days.

1. 'Basic Instinct 2' (2006)

Sequels that no one asked for are a dime a dozen, but Basic Instinct 2 takes the cake. Sharon Stone returns as Catherine Tramell, but the magic of the original is gone. The film is a dull, poorly written thriller that relies on gratuitous sex and violence to hide its lack of substance. It's a sad end to what was once a provocative franchise. The 2000s may have given us some great films, but these six R-rated disasters are proof that even the best decades have their share of cinematic garbage. Whether it's unnecessary sequels, misguided sci-fi, or preachy dramas, these films are best left in the past.
