Kevin Costner's departure from Yellowstone was one of the biggest bombshells in recent TV history. The star of the most-watched show on streaming at the time, Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan were reportedly at odds over creative differences. Sheridan won, and Costner walked away. But according to Sheridan, that narrative doesn't tell the whole story.

In a candid interview on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan explained that Costner was never meant to be the centerpiece for the entire series. The original plan was for John Dutton to lead for just three seasons before passing the torch to the next generation, particularly Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Remake Leaks at $60—A Rare Bargain?
A leaked $59.99 price for the Ocarina of Time remake on Switch 2 offers a rare break from the $70–$80 trend, but details remain scarce.

“The notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network,” Sheridan said. “Finally, Kevin hit a point where he said, ‘I gotta do my own thing.’ But we originally conceived it together that it was three seasons, and then the baton is handed — because we had to tread water for a bit there, and I think it was pretty evident.”

Of course, Yellowstone became a cultural phenomenon far beyond anyone's expectations. Paramount, eager to keep the golden goose laying, extended the show beyond its initial plan and kept John Dutton at the center for longer. The planned handoff to Kayce was delayed, and when Costner decided to focus on his own projects — namely his Western passion project Horizon — the transition became far messier than it might have been after three seasons.

Costner exited during the split fifth and final season, with John Dutton killed off in the first episode of the show's final batch. The actor had previously cited scheduling issues and ongoing production changes as reasons he couldn't return, but Sheridan's comments suggest the seeds of the exit were planted much earlier.

This revelation adds a new layer to the behind-the-scenes drama that has captivated fans. Sheridan, who has built a Paramount empire with non-negotiable demands, has always been known for his long-term vision. The Yellowstone universe continues to expand with spin-offs like 1923 and the upcoming Dutton Ranch, which recently tapped SEAL Team creator Benjamin Cavell as showrunner for its second season.

The rest of the main cast includes Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, Kelsey Asbille as Monica Dutton, and Gil Birmingham as Chairman Thomas Rainwater. All episodes of Yellowstone are streaming now on Paramount+.
