Apple TV+'s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed has kept viewers on the edge of their seats all season, but the finale delivered a gut-punch that no one saw coming. In an exclusive interview, star Tatiana Maslany opens up about the episode's biggest twists, her character's precarious victory, and the lingering mystery that could upend everything.

The Custody Battle: A Win That Feels Like a Loss

In the finale, Paula (Maslany) wins custody of her daughter Hazel after a brutal courtroom showdown with ex-husband Karl (Jake Johnson). But as Maslany explains, the victory is anything but clean. "It really felt in line with how the show never gets comfortable," she says. "The relentlessness of Paula's past—even when she's getting ahead, it's always there to haunt her."

Maslany was particularly drawn to Paula's vulnerable courtroom monologue, which she describes as "a clumsy, reactive speech" that exposes the double standards Paula faces as a mother. "She's pinned against the wall, naming the elephant in the room: she's up against a system that vilifies her for choices that aren't actually bad," Maslany says. "Her ex has had a sex life that derailed their marriage, but that's never a problem for him. It's a benefit."

The Portland Twist: Who Is Paula Really?

Just when Paula seems to have everything under control, a chilling video from an unknown number reveals that her mysterious past in Portland may be far darker than she's let on. The footage suggests Paula deliberately killed her neighbor, not accidentally as she claimed. Maslany admits she has "no idea" where the story goes from here. "It's the ultimate expression of inner life—huge griefs and huge joys coexisting right next to each other," she says.

The finale's final moments turn the show inward, asking: Can we trust Paula? And can Paula trust herself? Maslany hints that the answer is complicated. "She's on her own trajectory and drags people along with her," she says. "She's not super thoughtful about implicating others in a murder or mystery."

Paula's Unlikely Allies: Geri and Rudy

As the season progressed, Paula's bond with neighbors Geri (Charlie) and Rudy (Kiarra) deepened, forming a trio that Maslany likens to "the Scooby-Doo gang." But the finale leaves their loyalty in question. "I sort of feel like you can't trust anyone," Maslany says. "And they similarly can't really trust her."

Despite the tension, Maslany loved exploring those dynamics. "Playing with Charlie and Kiarra was amazing. We grew into those relationships naturally, and it always felt like we were in a different show a little bit," she says.

What's Next for Paula?

With the season ending on such a chilling note, fans are desperate for answers. Maslany, however, is just as in the dark as the audience. "I have no idea where it's going," she laughs. "But that's part of the fun. The show never lets you get comfortable."

Whether or not a second season materializes, the finale of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed stands as a masterclass in tension and character work. As Maslany puts it, "It's the ultimate expression of inner life—huge feelings that all coexist right next to each other."
