Don't lose your head—Sydney Sweeney is diving headfirst into another horror project. Following her surprise box office hit The Housemaid and the final season of Euphoria, the ever-busy actress has officially signed on to star in Hollow, a fresh retelling of Washington Irving's 1820 classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Sony Pictures has just acquired the film, which is slated for a fall release.
Based on Lindsey Anderson Beer's debut novel of the same name, Hollow shifts the focus to Katrina Van Tassel, played by Sweeney. In this version, Katrina finds herself caught in a supernatural love triangle between local rival Brom Bones and the new schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. It's a clever twist that puts a female perspective front and center in a story that's been told many times before—but rarely from her point of view.
Beer, who previously wrote and directed Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, will adapt her own novel for the screen and direct the project. Sweeney, meanwhile, will executive produce through her newly launched Honey Trap production company, continuing her trend of taking creative control over her projects.
This isn't Sweeney's first foray into horror. She previously explored the genre in Nocturne, Night Teeth, and Immaculate. But Hollow marks a significant step up, pairing her with a major studio and a beloved literary property. The original story has inspired countless adaptations, from the classic Disney animated short to Tim Burton's 1999 film, but this new take promises to be something different.
While some might groan at yet another reboot, Hollow seems poised to offer a fresh angle. For fans tired of pointless remakes, this one might just be worth getting excited about. With Sweeney's star power and Beer's literary pedigree, it could breathe new life into a 200-year-old ghost story.
As with many of Sweeney's recent projects, she's not just the face of the film—she's helping shape it from the ground up. Her involvement as executive producer signals a commitment to telling stories that matter to her, and Hollow looks to be no exception. Expect more details as production ramps up, but for now, fans of horror and classic literature alike have a reason to mark their calendars.
