Live-action adaptations of animated classics are all the rage, and now Studio Ghibli is joining the party. Kiki's Delivery Service, one of the most cherished fantasy films from the legendary Japanese studio, is officially getting a live-action television series from BBC Studios Kids & Family, UK production company Wheel in Motion, and Japan's Kadokawa Corporation.
The project arrives just as the source material—Eiko Kadono's 1985 novel—celebrates its 40th anniversary. The original book was adapted into a hit anime film by Hayao Miyazaki in 1989, becoming a global favorite. Now, a new generation will meet the young witch Kiki as she strikes out on her own in a charming seaside town.
Planned as a 10-part series, the live-action adaptation will primarily draw from the first volume of Kadono's six-book series. Irena Brignull, known for her work on The Boxtrolls and The Little Prince, has been tapped to write the script. “Kiki is one of fiction’s great girl characters and I’m thrilled to be part of bringing her to life in this new adaptation,” Brignull said in a statement. “Embodying the magic that exists in re-invention and human connection, she shows us what’s possible when you venture boldly and big-heartedly into the world to find a sense of purpose.”
The announcement comes on the heels of a busy year for live-action remakes. In 2025, Disney's Snow White and Lilo & Stitch both hit theaters, with the latter earning over a billion dollars and securing a sequel. DreamWorks also entered the live-action arena for the first time with How to Train Your Dragon, which earned near-perfect reviews and a sequel greenlight. Now, Studio Ghibli's iconic fantasy world is getting the same treatment.
For fans of perfect fantasy TV shows, this series promises to capture the heart and whimsy of the original. The story follows Kiki, a young witch who leaves home with her talking cat Jiji to find her place in the world, using her flying broom to start a delivery service. It's a tale of independence, friendship, and finding magic in everyday life.
Before Kiki's Delivery Service arrives, another big live-action adaptation is sailing into theaters next month. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui in Disney's live-action Moana, alongside Catherine Laga'aia as Moana. Directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton), the film hits theaters on July 10.
With the live-action Kiki's Delivery Service series in development, it's clear that the appetite for reimagining beloved animated stories is stronger than ever. Stay tuned for more updates on this magical project.
