Action cinema maestro Shane Black is bringing his signature blend of wit and mayhem to the small screen. AMC Studios has officially opened a writers' room for a television series based on John R. Maxim's Bannerman spy novels, with Black attached to executive produce and direct. The project is in early development but already generating serious buzz among spy thriller enthusiasts.
The series centers on Paul Bannerman, a former top-tier secret agent who has retired to the seemingly quiet town of Westport, Connecticut. But Westport is no ordinary suburb—it was deliberately designed as a sanctuary for retired assassins, spies, and covert operatives. When circumstances force Bannerman and his lethal neighbors back into action, the quiet life explodes into a high-stakes game of espionage and survival. The story draws from five novels published between 1989 and 2003, beginning with The Bannerman Solution.
Shane Black, known for writing Lethal Weapon and The Nice Guys, will bring his trademark profane, violent, and oddly heartfelt style to the series. He'll be joined by showrunner Craig Silverstein (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), who will also write the adaptation. Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) and Brian Witten (Creepshow) round out the producing team.
Black's career is a masterclass in action storytelling. After selling the script for Lethal Weapon with classmate Fred Dekker, he became Hollywood's go-to script doctor on films like Predator and The Hunt for Red October. He penned Last Action Hero, The Last Boy Scout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight before making his directorial debut with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. He later directed Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys, and The Predator.
AMC is betting big on spy thrillers and literary adaptations. The network also has a TV sequel to the classic bank robbery thriller Point Break in the works, as well as Great American Stories, an anthology series that will kick off with John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. For fans of the genre, Bannerman promises to be a standout addition to the landscape of forgotten spy thrillers that are perfect from start to finish.
With Black's track record for crafting memorable characters and explosive set pieces, this adaptation could be the next must-watch series for anyone who loves action-thriller masterpieces. Stay tuned for casting news and a potential release window as the writers' room gets to work.
