Sacred Heart's most storied rivalry is getting a generational twist. In an exclusive sneak peek from Scrubs Season 2, Episode 4, titled "My Chief," Zach Braff's JD finds himself on the receiving end of a prank from the hospital's new Maintenance Guy — who happens to be the Janitor's son. But this apple has fallen painfully far from the tree.
The clip opens with JD's office suddenly drenched as a single sprinkler sputters to life. He scrambles to rescue his laptop, but the damage is minimal — just one spout in the middle of the room. The Maintenance Guy (Darcy Michael) watches from the doorway, visibly deflated that his scheme didn't quite land. Instead of relief, JD is insulted. He tears into the younger custodian for being a "nepo baby" who can't even flood an office properly or forget his name. The other sprinklers only kick in after JD orders him to clean up the mess, leaving a soggy, pathetic scene — right as the original Janitor (Neil Flynn) arrives with muffins for his son, greeting his old nemesis with a chilling "dead man."
For longtime fans, the moment is a perfect callback to the original series, where Neil Flynn's Janitor made JD's life a daily gauntlet of psychological warfare. That dynamic ended when the Janitor left at the close of Season 8, but the revival brought him back as Chief Custodian of the Joint Commission — and revealed he had a son. Last season, the Maintenance Guy took over Sacred Heart's upkeep and, unlike his father, actually befriended JD. That truce shattered when JD accidentally implied the new guy was a nepo baby, reigniting the cycle of petty vengeance.
But as the sneak peek proves, the son lacks his father's commitment to the craft. Where the Janitor would have engineered a catastrophe, the Maintenance Guy delivers a minor inconvenience. JD's frustration isn't about the prank itself — it's that his new tormentor simply isn't good enough at making him miserable. It's a hilarious inversion of expectations, and a reminder that Scrubs still knows how to wring comedy from its oldest running gag.
Of course, JD has bigger problems in "My Chief." As Turk's (Donald Faison) best friend, he's caught in a moral bind when the Chief of Surgery makes a costly error. Does he report the mistake and risk his friend's career, or cover it up and compromise patient safety? Meanwhile, Elliot (Sarah Chalke) steps up with a new initiative at the hospital, and with Flynn back to taunt JD, the episode promises a strong continuation of a season that critics are already calling a step up from the acclaimed first revival.
Season 2 currently sits at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review, Collider's Greer Riddell gave it an 8/10, writing, "No matter how many other comedies try to reproduce that same level of human connection, Scrubs is the original and nothing else can quite match it." That blend of absurd humor and genuine heart remains the show's secret sauce, and Episode 4 looks to serve both in generous portions.
For those keeping score, the Janitor's return as a recurring menace has been one of the revival's highlights. His relationship with his son adds a new layer to the mythology, even as it resets the clock on his feud with JD. The question now is whether the Maintenance Guy will eventually grow into a worthy adversary — or if he'll remain a disappointing shadow of his father. Based on this clip, JD is rooting for the former, if only so he can feel properly persecuted again.
