For decades, Sauron has been portrayed as a menacing eye, a scheming shapeshifter, or a towering armored figure. But long before the One Ring, he had a darker, lesser-known chapter: his reign as the Lord of the Werewolves. Now, a new expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online is set to bring that forgotten era to life.
Announced for fall 2026, The Wolves of Mordor will explore the aftermath of Sauron's defeat, focusing on the werewolves he once commanded. These creatures, bound to his will, are left without purpose after the Ring's destruction, and players will encounter them in three new northeastern regions: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol. Each area bears the scars of Sauron's influence in unique ways, offering a fresh perspective on the land of Mordor beyond the usual volcanic wastelands.
This expansion digs into Tolkien lore that has rarely been touched by other media. In the First Age, Sauron captured the Elven stronghold of Tol Sirion, renaming it Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves. There, he bred a host of wolves inhabited by evil spirits, with Draugluin as their sire. The tragic tale of Finrod's death at the jaws of one of these beasts is also part of this history, as is Sauron's own transformation into a colossal wolf before being defeated by Huan, the hound of Valinor.
For fans of the wider legendarium, this is a welcome deep dive. Peter Jackson's films reduced Sauron to a prologue figure and a watchful eye, while The Rings of Power focused on his Annatar guise. Even the Shadow of Mordor games centered on Uruk politics and the Nemesis System. This expansion, however, promises to finally give the werewolf era its due, albeit briefly.
But The Wolves of Mordor isn't just about lore. The expansion adds a three-player instance, two six-player instances, and a raid planned before year's end. It also introduces the account-wide Survival Instinct system, which grants region-specific skills and lessons from local factions. A new Neighbor system will emphasize gifting, NPC relationships, journals, and home visits, adding a layer of community to the MMO.
As The Lord of the Rings Online approaches its 20th anniversary in April 2027, these updates are substantial. The game has evolved significantly since its launch, and this expansion seems poised to honor its legacy while pushing into new territory.
