Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac are back with more updates on their beloved docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, and this time they're giving fans a definitive timeline for the stadium expansion that's been a hot topic for seasons. In an exclusive chat with Collider's Steven Weintraub, the co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC opened up about the show's future, the team's incredible rise, and what's next for the Racecourse Ground.
The FX and Hulu series, which has already been renewed for three more seasons beyond the upcoming fifth, continues to chronicle the fairy-tale journey of the Welsh football club. Season 5 picks up after Wrexham's historic three consecutive promotions, with the team now eyeing a spot in the Premier League. The stakes have never been higher, as the world watches this once-unknown town fight for its place among football's elite.
From Underdogs to Disruptors
Reynolds and Mac reflected on how the show has evolved from a simple underdog story into something much bigger. Reynolds emphasized that the real engine behind Wrexham's success is the town itself. "That town has gone unseen and unheard for decades," he said. "They have personally saved their own club three different times, with hats in hand, getting pocket change at doorsteps to save the club from insolvency. They earned that in ways that are unbelievable."
Mac chimed in with a lighthearted moment about his recent name change, joking that it was partly inspired by a family tree discovery through Ancestry, one of the show's partners. "When a group of my family members came in through Ellis Island, it was not McElhenney. It was spelled 16 different ways," he explained. "The vast majority of them couldn't read or write anyway, so I felt like if Ellis Island was going to change it, I would just change it back."
Stadium Expansion Timeline Revealed
One of the most anticipated updates came when Weintraub asked about the status of the Racecourse Ground's Kop stand expansion. Mac confirmed that the project is moving forward and gave a clear timeline for completion. "We're actually building a stadium," he said with a laugh, correcting Reynolds' playful suggestion that it might be a chicken coop. The new Kop stand will add 5,000 to 6,000 seats, significantly boosting the venue's capacity.
Reynolds praised Mac's leadership on the project, saying, "This man makes things happen." The expansion is a key part of Wrexham's long-term strategy as they aim to compete at higher levels of English football.
Beyond Wrexham: Deadpool and Far Cry Updates
The conversation also touched on other projects. Reynolds teased the future of Deadpool, though he kept details close to the vest. Mac, meanwhile, shared an update on his Far Cry series, which is being developed with Alien: Earth's Noah Hawley. While specifics remain under wraps, fans can expect more news soon.
