Stephen King has been a literary powerhouse for over five decades, and he shows no signs of slowing down. In the 2020s alone, he's released roughly seven novels and two short story collections, with another book due this October. While his early classics remain unmatched, his late-career work still offers plenty of rewards—and a few stumbles. Here's our ranking of King's ten most recent books, from detective stories to dark fantasy tales.
10. Elevation (2018)
This slim 144-page novella is one of King's most unusual works. Scott Carey begins losing weight inexplicably, regardless of what he eats, and eventually discovers he's becoming weightless. Instead of horror, King crafts a gentle, fable-like story about community and relationships. It's readable and occasionally touching, but feels slight, with underdeveloped characters and a central idea that could have been explored more deeply.
9. Sleeping Beauties (2017)
Co-written with his son Owen, this 700-page novel presents a high-concept premise: when women fall asleep, they become encased in cocoons and transported to another realm. The story explores how the disappearance of women affects a small town, making for an intriguing social allegory. However, the large cast feels fragmented, and the pacing drags. Few characters are given enough depth to anchor the sprawling narrative.
8. Never Flinch (2025)
This crime novel brings back fan-favorite Holly Gibney, who also appears in Mr. Mercedes and End of Watch. Here, Holly helps a detective track a vigilante while protecting a feminist activist facing death threats. The book starts strong, but loses momentum as the plot becomes convoluted. Some social commentary feels shoehorned in, making this one of the weaker Holly novels.
7. Gwendy's Final Task (2022)
The final installment in a trilogy co-written with Richard Chizmar, this horror-adventure follows Gwendy Peterson, now a political figure, as she's drawn back to the mysterious button box with destructive powers. The narrative balances grounded character moments with cosmic stakes, and Gwendy's internal struggles—including memory issues—make her compelling. Still, it lacks the emotional impact of King's best work.
6. Later (2021)
This punchy novel returns to a focused style. Jamie Conklin, a young boy who can see and communicate with the dead, narrates as he gets entangled in a dangerous situation. King builds clear rules around the ability, creating tension and structure. The supernatural element is handled with restraint, and the final act delivers a juicy twist.
5. Holly (2023)
In this standalone novel, Holly Gibney operates as a private investigator, taking on a missing persons case that leads into disturbing territory. The COVID pandemic rages in the background, adding a layer of realism. Holly's sharp attention to detail makes her a compelling protagonist, and the story builds to a tense, satisfying conclusion. It's a strong entry in the Holly series.

4. If It Bleeds (2020)
This novella collection includes the title story, which follows Holly Gibney as she investigates a mysterious being that feeds on tragedy. King's ability to blend supernatural horror with human emotion shines here. Each story is tightly crafted, with strong character work and unsettling themes. It's a reminder of King's mastery of the shorter form.
3. The Institute (2019)
This novel follows Luke Ellis, a gifted 12-year-old kidnapped and taken to a secret facility where children with psychic abilities are exploited. King builds a chilling atmosphere and a compelling protagonist, with themes of resistance and hope. The story is gripping and emotionally resonant, earning comparisons to classics like Firestarter.
2. Billy Summers (2021)
This crime novel centers on Billy Summers, a hitman who wants to retire after one last job. King subverts expectations by focusing on Billy's humanity and his relationship with a young woman he rescues. The story is tense, character-driven, and features a surprising meta twist. It's a standout late-career work.
1. The Outsider (2018)
This detective-horror hybrid begins with the brutal murder of a young boy, with evidence pointing to a beloved teacher. But the suspect has an airtight alibi. King masterfully blends police procedural with supernatural horror, creating a gripping mystery that explores themes of evil and identity. It's a modern classic and the best of King's recent output.
