Paddington Bear has been a beloved figure in children's literature since Michael Bond introduced him in 1958, but it was the 2014 live-action/CGI film that catapulted him into a global phenomenon. Directed by Paul King, the movie blended British charm with modern storytelling, capturing hearts worldwide. Now, fans can celebrate the bear's big-screen debut with a stunning new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release, arriving just in time for the holidays.
The original Paddington follows the journey of a young Peruvian bear, voiced with gentle earnestness by Ben Whishaw, who travels to London after his rainforest home is destroyed. Lost and alone at Paddington Station, he's taken in by the Brown family. While Mr. Brown (Hugh Bonneville) is initially hesitant, Mrs. Brown (Sally Hawkins) welcomes him with open arms. As Paddington adjusts to urban life, his well-meaning but clumsy nature leads to a series of comedic mishaps. The plot thickens when a ruthless taxidermist, Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman), sets her sights on capturing him for her collection.
Beyond its entertaining narrative, the film resonated deeply with audiences for its themes of immigration, kindness, and unconditional love. Mrs. Brown's decision to take in Paddington transforms his life, and the movie's warm-hearted message felt like a comforting embrace. Made on a modest budget of $55 million, it grossed an impressive $326.1 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing independent family film at the time. Critics praised King's wholesome direction, the seamless CGI integration, and Whishaw's endearing voice performance.
The success of Paddington spawned a franchise that has become a holiday favorite, with sequels and even a TV series. For those eager to revisit the original in the best possible quality, Lionsgate is releasing a new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition. This marks the first time the film is available in 4K in the U.S., and it comes packed with special features that will delight both new and longtime fans.

The collector's edition includes a treasure trove of bonus content. Fans can enjoy legacy features like Meet the Characters, When a Bear Comes to Stay, and From Page to Screen.
