Seven years after the release of the cult classic thriller Ma, Octavia Spencer has officially confirmed that a sequel is in the works. The Oscar-winning actress, who played the unforgettable Sue Ann Ellington, revealed in a recent interview with ScreenRant that the team is "working very diligently" on the screenplay because they want to "do it right."

The original Ma, released in 2019, was a modest Blumhouse production with a budget of roughly $5 million. It went on to gross $61.2 million worldwide, making it a highly profitable venture. But its true legacy was cemented during the pandemic, when it found a second life on streaming platforms, repeatedly appearing on charts and becoming a viral sensation.

From The Godfather Part II to Blade II, these middle chapters prove that the second act can be the most memorable in a trilogy.

Now, Blumhouse is betting that the character of Sue Ann has become a genuine cultural phenomenon. CEO Jason Blum has previously noted that the film's streaming success and meme-driven popularity proved the character's staying power. The sequel, tentatively titled Ma 2, will see Spencer return as Sue Ann, with Ashley Nicole Black penning the script.

The challenge for the sequel is significant. The first film ended with Sue Ann's revenge campaign culminating in her burning house, seemingly closing her story. To bring her back, the writers must find a way to preserve the unique blend of psychological damage, social humiliation, camp, and sudden violence that made the original so replayable. They also need to explain how Sue Ann survives and what could push her into a second campaign.

Part of the original's enduring appeal was its meme culture. Fans created poster parodies like Ma Ma Land, Roma, Ma Star Is Born, The Irishma, The Greatest Show Ma, and Mad Ma: Fury Road. Other memes featured Spencer peering through a car window, her strict basement rules, and the iconic line, "Don't make me drink alone." The trend grew so large that Spencer herself reposted fan creations, promoted the #MaMemes tag, and launched a contest for the best entry.
