The Fantastic Pavilion, launched in 2023 by Alex Noyer and Pablo Guisa Koestinger, has quickly become a hub for genre cinema at the Marché. This year's edition saw a 70% increase in attendance, with around 4,000 participants. Presenting the Golden Key, Noyer praised Refn's enduring influence: "As Nicolas Winding Refn returns to Cannes with a new horror story, we are delighted to award him the Golden Key to the Fantastic Pavilion. His belief and craft in horror made him a fantastic honoree this year."

Refn's career spans from the gritty Pusher trilogy in Europe to his Hollywood breakthrough with Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. He later directed the Prime Video series Too Old to Die Young and Netflix's Copenhagen Cowboy. His new film, Her Private Hell, stars Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, and Havana Rose Liu.

The Golden Key has previously been awarded to genre icons like David Cronenberg, Eli Roth, and J.A. Bayona.
