She clarified that while not everything in the movie is true to life, the Windex obsession was absolutely real. Her father, a Greek immigrant, genuinely used the glass cleaner as a cure-all. She recalled how he treated warts on his hand and his sister's knees with Windex, and when they disappeared, he became convinced it was a miracle solution. From then on, any household ailment was met with the same advice: "Put some Windex on it."
Vardalos explained that the more bizarre a detail in the film, the more likely it was pulled from reality. "The weirder the thing is in the movie, the more likely it is to be true," she said, adding that she invented the family restaurant for narrative purposes. But the Windex gag was too good—and too personal—to leave out.
To include the product in the film, Vardalos and her team had to get permission from SC Johnson, the company that makes Windex. She wrote to them, and the response was more heartfelt than she could have imagined. The company read the script and sent a beautiful letter saying they would be "proud" to be part of a movie that promotes family values. They also added a practical note: "Please do not tell anyone to put the Windex on their warts."
That letter not only secured the rights but also cemented Windex's place in rom-com history. The joke became so iconic that when My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was released in 2016, SC Johnson partnered with Universal Pictures for a promotional campaign around the product. Even in the third film, which takes place after Gus's death, Windex remains a subtle nod to his legacy.
Vardalos's story is a testament to how personal touches can elevate a comedy into something timeless.
