Hot off his Oscar win for Sinners, Michael B. Jordan is already dominating the streaming world with a very different kind of project. The actor's latest film, the animated fantasy adventure Swapped, quietly became Netflix's most-watched movie in the U.S. just days after its May 1 release. It's a swift follow-up that proves Jordan's appeal stretches far beyond live-action blockbusters.
Swapped is a body-swap comedy set in a lush, magical forest. Jordan voices Ollie, a young character who finds himself trading places with a creature from another world. The voice cast is stacked with talent: Juno Temple, Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer, Justina Machado, Ambika Mod, Lolly Adefope, and Táta Vega all lend their voices. The film has already pulled in 15.5 million views, according to reports, putting it ahead of heavy hitters like the Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton survival thriller Apex.
Critics have given Swapped a mixed but generally positive reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 68% score. One critic noted, “The plot itself isn’t extraordinary but the critters populating this forest wonderland are.” Another added, “It's all rather predictable, but the world-building is distinctive and the animation is pleasingly lush.” That's enough to make it a solid family-friendly option for subscribers looking for something light and visually stunning.
Jordan's next big-screen project is a remake of the 1968 crime classic The Thomas Crown Affair, which he will also direct. That film, starring Adria Arjona, Aubrey Plaza, Kenneth Branagh, Paapa Essiedu, and Danai Gurira, is set for a March 5, 2027 release. But for now, Swapped is giving fans a chance to hear Jordan in a completely different register—one that's playful, animated, and full of whimsy.
The success of Swapped is part of a broader trend of fantasy and animated films finding huge audiences on streaming.
