DC Studios has finally confirmed who will voice Dick Grayson, the original Robin, in the upcoming animated feature Dynamic Duo. The film, which promises a fresh take on the Boy Wonder's origin, will star Mason Thames, known for his roles in The Black Phone and the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake.
Peter Safran, co-chairman of DC Studios, shared the news during an interview with Collider while promoting Clayface. He revealed that Thames was not just a recruit but a true volunteer, eager to bring the iconic character to life. "We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU," Safran said. "Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. He came in and auditioned the s*** out of it and was awesome."
Thames' enthusiasm extended beyond the audition room. Safran recalled a visit to the DC offices where Thames, accompanied by his father, was like a kid in a candy store, snapping photos with every piece of memorabilia. "He's a fan," Safran added, underscoring the actor's genuine passion for the character.
Dynamic Duo will focus on the relationship between Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, Batman's first two Robins. In the comics, their paths diverge dramatically—Dick, an orphaned circus performer, and Jason, a street-smart kid from Gotham's mean streets. The film is expected to explore their friendship before their lives take different turns. It's slated for a theatrical release on September 22, 2028.
The movie is also notable for its groundbreaking animation style, developed by Swaybox Studios. Using a blend of CGI, stop-motion, and real-time puppetry, the film aims to deliver a visually unique experience. Safran compared the technology to Pixar's early days: "I think that the Swaybox technology is as original today as Pixar was when it did Toy Story." He praised the visceral quality that real cameras bring to the action, something traditional animation might not capture.
Directed by Swaybox co-founder Arthur Mintz and produced by Theresa Andersson, Dynamic Duo is already generating buzz. Safran expressed confidence in the team, noting that while the process is currently time-consuming, it will become more efficient with each project. "I think, like all new technologies, it'll become faster after you've R&D'd the whole process," he said.
For fans of the Dark Knight's extended family, this news adds to the excitement surrounding DC's animated slate. While Dynamic Duo is still a few years away, the casting of Thames is a promising sign. His previous work has shown range and charisma, making him a fitting choice for the acrobatic hero.
In the meantime, DC fans can catch Clayface, now in theaters, starring Tom Rhys Harries as the shape-shifting villain. And for those who can't wait for more Robin adventures, there's always the classic Hugh Jackman's dark Robin Hood tale to stream. But for the definitive Dick Grayson story, Dynamic Duo is shaping up to be a must-see.
